How you can halve the cost of decorating your home

Collaborative feature

If there is one thing that I have learnt on my quest for a thrifty home, it’s that low-costs doesn’t automatically mean low-quality or low-value. I know that sometimes it can, but with the right preparation and planning, it doesn’t have to be and this is definitely true when it comes to renovating your home. It IS possible to put a cap on the budget, and still get a great looking home. So if you’re hoping to create your dream home read on, and you could be saving money and renovating your home in no time.

Buy reclaimed

If you are looking to update a couple of rooms in the home, or to renovate a specific room, then it could be a good idea to look at buying reclaimed goods. When shopping around for these kinds of items to add into the room, you will need to change your perspective a little when shopping around. Look in reclamation yards, thrift stores, and even online on sites like eBay or Gumtree. Some vintage pieces might need a lick of paint or varnish, so you’ll need to be imaginative about changes you can make to them. If you don’t just take the pieces of furniture at face value you’ll be able to get some bargains.Look online

When you look online for things that you can renovate your house with, it saves a massive amount of time. The amount of kitchen designs or living room furniture that you can see in an hour online is so much more than it would be of an hour shopping in a furniture store. So shopping online gives you a good way to see the styles of things that you’d like. It also allows you to look for the best price and for something to fit your budget. You can browse a great range of cheap bathrooms for instance (I got my whole bathroom suite for £300 online!) as well as sofas or paint colors. Planning out the renovation online can make it much easier to stick to a budget.

Mix and match

If you are concerned about cost, but you don’t want to compromise on style, then finding some pieces that you can mix and match is a great idea. You might not want to make your home a complete ‘flat-packs-are-us,’ so mixing with some vintage pieces, or some things that you have upcycled can make a difference when it comes to the overall style of your home. Some cheaper pieces can look much more expensive that they are, though – especially if you change things like the handles. Shop around and take your time to make your decisions on what works well together.

Don’t risk it

If you’re not 100% competent with an aspect of DIY, then you shouldn’t even attempt it. Think you can plaster a wall as well as a professional or think you know how to do some plumbing? If you genuinely think that you can do it, then go for it. But if a lot of it could be guess work, then pay a professional. They’ll get it right the first time, rather than you possibly making things worse. Are you decorating your home at the moment?
