Get creative with lighting – 5 fun projects

Advertisement feature

Never underestimate the power of great lighting. It can completely transform a room if you do it right. There are plenty of things that you can do with a few well-placed lamps and mirrors to create a lovely atmosphere, but that’s not very exciting. If you really want to impress visitors, why not get a little more creative. The possibilities are endless when it comes to lighting so here are a few innovative lighting ideas that you could try at home.

1. Create A Night Sky

Sleeping under the stars is a beautiful idea so, why not bring the stars into your bedroom? All you need is some fairy lights distributed evenly across the ceiling, or above the bed or around the windows. The effect is a dazzling night sky that you can fall asleep under every single night.

2. Mirrors

Placing string lights around mirrors is a great idea. It’s fairly practical as it gives you better lighting when you are looking at yourself in the mirror. But it also creates a great looking effect as the lights will reflect off the mirror and bounce around the room.

3. Strip Lights

LED strip lights have so many great uses. They are brilliant in the kitchen; try putting the underneath cupboards so you don’t need to bother with the “big light” at night time. A good quality set of led strip lights coupled with some cheap motion sensors, can give you a futuristic walkway feel in your hallway. It’s also a great idea for new parents as they can have a bit of light without having to wake up the baby by switching on the main lights. LED lights are also much cheaper to run so you’ll be saving on your electricity bill.

4. Mason Jar Lamps

If you are going to use lamps to brighten up your home, why not try going for something a bit less traditional? Get yourself a mason jar and a set of fairy lights with an attached battery pack. All you need to do is wrap them up and put them inside and you’ve got yourself a homemade lamp. Painting the outside with a thin layer of paint will allow you to change the colour to anything you like.

5. Photographs

Displaying your photographs in frames is ok, but it’s not that interesting. Instead, you could make use of those old Christmas lights that you’ve got sat in the cupboard. String them up like a washing line and get some clothes pegs. It’s best to get the small wooden ones, big plastic ones will ruin the look. Simply peg up all of your photos between the lights and you’ve got a lovely looking display.

  1. Hi Christina, it’s actually a thicker ‘snow glitter’ that comes in a sprinkle tub – I got it from a craft shop at Christmas 🙂

  2. Hi Cassie – what did you use in the photo to paint the mason jars in no. 4? It looks like glitter but more elegant?

  3. Great ideas! I love lights and currently have some around my big bedroom mirror and in a couple of mason jars like you’ve recommended. I also have some on my bookshelf and on my bar cart 🙂
