How to upcycle your old Christmas jumpers into cosy fair isle cushions

Do you have a lovely Christmas jumper that you've shrunk in the wash? Did the moths nibble their way through your favourite festive pullover? Don't bin them - you can turn your old knits into Christmas cushions!

All it takes is some straight lines of stitching to make cute throw pillows to dress up your bed or sofa with a fun fair isle pattern. Read on to find out how to upcycle those ugly Christmas jumpers into something seasonally special…

I know that making soft furnishings can seem like a daunting task, and I admit that putting zips into fabric is not my most favourite activity, but this project is super-easy. Let’s face it, the hard work of knitting a lovely fair isle or festive pattern has already been done for you!

The back is a basic ‘envelope’ opening, so you can easily pop a cushion pad inside the cover. It’s only a matter of layering 3 pieces of fabric and straight stitching around all the edges, and there you have it! A lovely festive cushion to adorn your sofa throughout December. Check out my step-by-step tutorial blog post here to make your own jumper cushions.

I DIYed my own festive cushions and shared the step-by-step tutorial in Issue 48 of Reloved Magazine this month. If you haven’t already got your hands on a copy of the magazine, you can find it in WH Smith, Tesco, Sainburys and Costco stores, or ask your local newsagent to get in a copy for you! Or you could just order the magazine online or download the digital edition straight away.

Be sure to pick up a copy of Reloved magazine this month as it’s packed full of seasonal projects and decorating inspiration – I know you’ll love it! And let me know if you have a go at making this project for yourself – I’d love to see your projects so tag me in your pics on instagram @Cassiefairy.

  1. I love this idea! It’s a shame I collect Christmas jumpers and refuse to part with any of them or I’d be whizzing these up this weekend! You’re so creative xx
