My retro-inspired living room – an old armchair rescued!

I am pleased to say that I’ve got another freebie for my retro living room design project - an armchair that was on its way from a vintage furniture shop to the dump. It didn’t exactly look like this when my hubby brought it home to me; it had a cream damask patterned cover over it which went all the way down to the floor and hid the chair’s legs. When I first saw it, it would be an understatement to say that I was disappointed, in fact I may have even used “urgghhh”. But my husband had already looked beneath the cover and knew that underneath was this lovely original brown and orange patterned fabric.

Okay, I say lovely, and I know that to some people it’s probably even less desirable in this state, but to me it was absolutely perfect for our 60s/70s living room, especially with the orange line running through it. And best of all, it was completely free and I’d previously been looking for a small retro armchair for the living room and all had been out of any kind of price-range that I could afford!

So that’s another item of furniture kept out of the landfill site, recycled and reused in my living room – and that make’s it even more special for me!

Interior design inspirations for my retro living room

When I moved in to my new home, the magnolia walls and featureless rooms meant that I had a blank canvas to create the comfortable home-of-my-dreams. The living room is actually really small but I’d like to make it into a retro haven, and here’s my mood board of fabrics, patterns, furniture and accessories for a pretty garish late 50s, 60s and kind-of icky 70s combo.

I’m working around my one piece of must-keep furniture, my sofa (I love it so much that he’s even been named: Peter Couch) and I’m on a serious budget so I’ll need to be a bit flexible with my shopping choices and go for the best value for money that I can find! I’m not shy of a DIY project either (as you probably already know) so I’ll be looking for items that I can jazz up myself too! Check back soon to see how I’m getting on with my room overhaul and let me know if you have any suggestions for where I can get the look on a budget!

Beautiful summer blooms – our garden in the sun

Thanks to all this gorgeous sunny weather we’ve been having this week, all the lovely plants and trees are bursting into life during and a leisurely wander around the garden earlier today we spotted some amazing flowers and my husband photographed these along with boughs heavy with fragrant blossom.

I hope you’ll enjoy these photos too, they certainly make me feel summery and I’ve used one as the desktop background for my computer so I’ll keep the sunshine with me when I’m working indoors – I really must get a work-space set up outside to make this most of this weather while it’s still here :o)

DIY project – renovating an old footstool

Here’s a little DIY project that my husband and I did over the weekend (well, he did it and I ‘helped’ by saying yes to the fabric choice!). He took the cushion pad out of the stool frame and lightly sanded the legs before painting with a chalky blue wood paint.

Then the fabric was cut to size and wrapped tightly around the cushion pad and stapled on the underside. Hubby then covered the edges with picture-framing tape to neaten and stop the edges of fabric from fraying.

When the frame was dry, he lightly flicked a brush over the edges of the legs using a little white paint for a distressed look and popped the cushion paid back into place – well done hubby!
