Tuesday Shoesday ~ High heels: show-stopper or back-breaker? Famous falls in skyscraper heels!

Wearing sky high heels may make you feel on top of the world, but as these celebrities highlight, there is a long way to fall when strapping on your favourite Christian Louboutin’s. So here are a few examples of why it may be best to play is safe with a pair of stylish but comfy women’s shoes on a day to day basis;

Catwalk models are seasoned pros in the stiletto department, however, Prada’s Spring 09 shoes proved too much for three of the models.  In particular, it’s hard not to squirm as you see the strains Katie Fogerty’s ankles were going through as she tried to keep her balance. This ending with her unzipping the gorgeous designer shoes before they caused her any serious injury, might be best to keep these as ornaments rather than footwear!

Similarly, Agness Deyn has also had her fair share of bumps and bruises on the runway falling twice in Naomi Campbell’s Fashion For Relief Haiti Benefit. Luckily, her upbeat charm managed to laugh it off and take a curtsey to hide the embarrassment and later tweeting about the falls hurting her knees.

Some of our favourite performers have also fallen with a thud in fast paced dance routines. Owning the stage in platforms is not as easy as celebrities make it look; Beyonce, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez have all suffered heavy falls on stage from a slip of the heel. This is due to excessive pressure being placed on the foot whilst it is in an unnatural position which can cause sprains as well as long term damage to your feet, legs and back.

One star who is famous for her love of outlandish outfits is Lady Gaga. She has experimented with sky scrapers as high as 10 inches (and who can forget her Alexander McQueen specials!), but even her avante garde style has left her head over heels when she took a tumble on stage as this video shows;

She shows true showmanship and springs back up carrying on with a seamless performance. That is not to say that this hasn’t caused personal injury or upset to others in the past, celebrities are prepared to power through painful falls but they can easily cause muscle damage as the pressure on the knee is heightened.

So, is it really worth it? Carol Vordaman’s recent fall down several steps face first left her with a broken nose that had to be reset after she was rushed to hospital.  She counted herself lucky that the injuries were not more serious after her ankle boots left her more vulnerable. Ouch!

Overall, it’s a tough sacrifice admitting defeat from your favourite pair of toe-tappers, but if they are causing you serious pain and you are clinging onto friends or furniture for extra support then they may not be worth the long term injury. Bunions, sprains and more seriously, osteoarthritis, are all side effects from the added pressure to the inside of the woman’s knees caused from extensive heel wearing. Therefore, it is important to ensure that on a day to day basis your shoes are comfy and sensible, and perhaps save the stilettoes for a special night, that way we can ensure that shoes remain a lady’s best friend.

Fashion trendspotting – a leopard never changes its spots

I can’t believe it – leopard print is back. Again. The favourite pattern of classy barmaids up and down the country (particularly those in Soapland) has returned to the catwalks this year and is already popping up in my favourite high street and online shops. Plus I’ve noticed that more and more celebrities are wearing leopard print items. Sometimes its just a subtle accessory; such as Holly Willoughby in these gorgeous kitty shoes or everyone’s favourite fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker in a very wearable leopard print scarf.

But sometimes the feline print is the main focus of the celeb’s outfit; the nation’s sweetheart Cheryl Cole looks super-cute in a prom dress and gorgeous actress Katie Holmes has never looked classier in this printed coat. Plus Rihanna’s looking fierce in a coloured leopard skirt, and here’s Jennifer Lopez wearing from A.L.C (possibly the scariest thing since double-denim) to promote her film Parker in January this year. Of course, the thigh-high Louboutins make the whole outfit much more high-fashion rather than barmaid, but is the big-cat print a little bit too scary to wear for everyday use?

Personally, I think it can be done and I will definitely be getting myself a cat-print scarf like SJP. I’ve also found some beautiful pieces of animal-print clothing from Lashes of London and I’ve gathered together my favourites to follow the leopard trend this season. This is my ultimate wish-list and some of these items are actually on sale already – I can’t help myself when faced with a bargain ;) I especially love the neon pink dress and would certainly feel a very Rihanna-esque in it, but I think it’s subtle enough to wear for most occasions and all year round.

Tuesday Shoesday – Jazzy jellies for seaside paddling

Do you remember jelly shoes? As a child I used to wear to wear jelly shoes all summer long – they kept your feet cool, were so comfy (and kind of moulded themselves to your feet in the hot weather) and you could go paddling at the seaside or in a river without worry of catching your foot on a spiky stone.

And now, jelly shoes are available for adults too! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw them in New Look and they’ve had a glamourous makeover to say the least – these nude sandals with diamanté studs (or this pair with an owl design below) would be pretty swish beach-wear this summer! Plus these glitter flip-flops come in a range of on-trend colours including coral, oatmeal, gold and turquoise.

Even the stars are strutting their stuff in jelly shoes this Summer season; Fearne Cotton and Kate Bosworth were both spotted in yellow jellies, Rihanna & Katy Perry have been stepping out in Vivienne Westwood’s heart jelly heels and Anne Hathaway (below) wore pretty princess pink:

As an alternative to the monstrous Crocs that have been the staple seaside shoe over recent years, jelly shoes seem much more retro, stylish and cute. It probably helps that they come in all kinds of styles, less-garish colours and even with heels for the ultra-glam among us – just look at these gorgeous sky blue Gucci Jelly Marola wedge shoes below!

Best of all, jelly shoes are pretty cheap starting at about £5, around £12-15 at New Look & Very.co.uk and going up to a relatively purse-friendly £60 for Vivienne Westwood’s designer offering. Plus I’d feel a little bit vintage-trendy wearing jelly sandals, especially if I could get these 80’s and 90’s style kiddies ones in my adult size: by Juju sandals at Very.co.uk and Urban Outfitters.

Famous Tutus – Rihanna’s ballerina outfit

 Just look how cute Rihanna looks in her ballerina dress with a full tutu skirt – a very different look to the usual edgy fashions she’s often spotted in. I think she looks lovely in her sugar-sweet tulle layers and floral embellishments!

But this is not the first time Rihanna has worn a tutu, she has previously mixed in girly details with her usual boyish style, which looks great and makes a fab fashion statement. Get her look for yourself:
