Thrifty Fashion – 4 looks from one denim shirt

I’m one of those people who wear only a few items in their wardrobe over and over again. The statistic that’s always quoted is that most of us only wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time and I am certainly guilty of this. However I want to get the most use out of my clothes - I’ve already paid for them after all, and we all know that the value of an item comes down to cost-per-wear. So over the course of a few blog posts I’m going to take items from my wardrobe and rework them into different looks. Hopefully this will give you some ideas for wearing your own leather jacket (in my previous post here) or denim shirt and will inspire you to do the same.

So today it’s the denim shirt. This item of clothing was everywhere last year and the high street is still full of them. I remember being desperate to buy a denim shirt last summer but couldn’t find the right one. I even stole my husband’s denim shirt for a couple of wears but it really was to big for me so I carried on looking for the perfect one. I eventually made the purchase at Matalan in the January sale and spent only a few pounds on my soft denim shirt. It was the right colour, a great fit and I knew I’d get loads of wear out of it. However, after a handful of wears with my navy trousers I ran out of inspiration and the shirt was relegated to the back of the wardrobe. Seeing as spring is the ideal time for wearing pale blues and layers, I thought I should investigate different ways of wearing the shirt and here’s what I’ve come up with:

Leather Jacket from Bon Prix, belt from Apricot & handbag from Next

Jumper from New Look, Wonderfit jeans from George at Asda & scarf from 99p Stores (can you believe it?!)

You may have already spotted this leather jacket look from my last post and it just goes to show that these items of clothing can be mixed-and-matched to create new looks for different occasions. I really like how the denim shirt looks with my New Look jumper. This is one of many jumpers I’ve bought recently because they are a nice thin knit and good colours for this time of year. These two looks will keep me warm on more chilly Spring days, especially when layered up with a chunky cardi or coat.

Cat print scarf from New Look, belt from Claires and satchel I picked up at the car boot sale

Pink dress from Internacionale (only £2 in the sale!), belt from ASOS and floral weekend bag from Primark

I think the pink dress is my favourite look as it’s much more summery than all the others and very ‘me’! Of course, my cat scarf has made an appearance again – it seems to go with everything so it’s been a good purchase from New Look. Fashion Trendspotting – Sundae girl for spring

I was reading this month’s Cosmo and really enjoyed their Spring fashion pages including a story called “Sundae Girl” – ice cream colours and soft, flowing fabrics. It included some gorgeous looks for Spring and clothing that can be worn well into summer too. Here I’ve snapped some of my favourite looks from this shoot and am certainly getting that blouse in the last pic: it’s only £20 from F&F at Tesco – now that’s my kind of price!

Although I loved these pretty, girly outfits, unfortunately not all of the items were from supermarkets and some of were actually a bit too spendy for me, such as the Ted Baker dress in the top photo at £249 and the cute tutu skirt in the middle pic is £130 alone (from Disaya) – a little too much in my opinion, and that’s without the extra cost of the top, shoes and clutch!

So I thought about how I could re-create this ethereal girly look at home, and I’ve come up with a new style of tutu-skirt: something that is a bit more fashiony rather than fancy dress and I’ve made it in two colours so far – a nudey cream, which would be perfect for Spring/Summer 2013, and a sheer grey which could even be worn during the Autumn and Winter with some wooly tights!

Let me know what to you think about this new style of tulle skirt and whether you’ll be wearing the “Sundae girl” look this spring/summer season. Keep an eye out on www.TutusWingsandPrettyThings.com and I’ll soon be adding this new range of skirts for my lovely customers ;)

My favourite photos – A tiny bird’s nest

I was fortunate enough to accidentally come across this birds nest that had been built inside a paper bag in the garden, with these tiny eggs nestling in it. Luckily we hadn’t disturbed the birds and we’ve since seen the mother flying in and sitting on the eggs. Don’t these eggs look like chocolate mini-eggs?! I’ve never seen anything like it in real life before, so I’m very excited to see the babies when they hatch and start to leave the nest.

Any idea what kind of bird’s eggs these are? The mother is very tiny and brown – so we thought it might be a wren, but a robin has also been suggested – please leave me a comment if you have any idea!

Spring has sprung… and now it’s BST already!

So the clocks jumped forwards an hour last night to British Summer Time and, as if by magic, the flowers woke up, the blossom on the trees bloomed and birds sang loudly in the blue sky. I even saw a woodpecker this morning – that’s how very definitely spring/summer it is!

I also noticed a very seasonal (although completely accidental) yellow still-life display in my fruit-bowl so I’ve snapped these pics which I think totally sum up the season perfectly.

Getting ready for Mardi Gras!

Fantastic news to kick off the year: I have been asked again to create a Mardi Gras costume for one of my best customers.

This year the theme is Easter/Spring so she chose a pink & white colour scheme and asked me to make a very frilly ballet tutu with lots of frothy layers. Of course, I was happy to oblige and here is the finished result:

I certainly hope that she likes her custom-made tutu and has a great time at the 2012 Mardi Gras!
