The next big interior design trends for 2017

The New Year is a great time to think about freshening up our homes with new indoor furniture, updated colour schemes and a few of the hottest accessories in line with the latest trends. It’s also the time of year that trend forecasters pull out their crystal balls and announce the home décor trends coming up in the year ahead.
I’ve had a look at all the predictions and here are my picks of the top eight interior themes we can expect to see in 2017.

Super Natural
As technology becomes more and more integral to our daily lives and developments such as artificial intelligence and 3D printing look set to cause greater disruption, people are looking to nature and natural materials to provide balance. A strong desire to bring nature into our homes and workplaces will see interiors filled with greenery, from hanging pots, to hydroponic indoor gardens planted with vegetables and herbs. Sustainable and recycled materials will also feature strongly, with worn or aged furnishings and accessories. Sofas and designer furniture will be made from sustainable materials;  designers are even beginning to experiment with algae and fungi to develop new products. Key colour for this trend is Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2017 ‘Greenery’, a bright and powerful green hue.pantone-greenery-colour-pop-interior-design-trend-2017Nordic Influence
Scandinavian style continues to exert a strong influence on interiors with abundant natural light, a sense of space and simple well-designed furniture using natural materials. Natural textures and materials – such as wooden furniture, fur and shearling throws, hides and cork – ensure this look never appears cold or sterile. Bold fabrics and handcrafted accessories are also key elements. Key colours to recreate this look in your own home include white and soft gray with primary coloured accents.sideboard-sandinavian-danish-colour-pop-chair-mid-century-modernRaw and Industrial
The raw, industrial aesthetic is also still a strong influence, with concrete, clay, steel and glass forming the main materials. Again, this suits the trend for upcycled homewares as older items with rust spots, faded colours and patina fit in perfectly. If you’re lucky, you could give your home an industrial look for only a few pounds if you’re able to find disused shop/factory fittings, wooden pallets and rusted metalwork. The key colours for this look are gray, beige, off-white, yellow, white, walnut brown and glints of gold and copper.industrial-interior-design-trend-2017Reflective
For enthusiasts of contemporary furniture and décor, this design theme could be for you. The atmosphere here is soft and friendly, without being overly romantic and sweet. Modern materials and indoor furniture will feature cool mirrored, transparent effects. Look out for iridescent lamps, overlapping coloured glass shapes, shiny glazes, copper finishes, faceted shapes and reflective surfaces. These modern effects are contrasted with the tactility of handmade knitting and crochet to create a very livable theme. Choose muted key colours such as nude, blue, lavender, yellow, rose, turquoise, yellow-green, pastel yellow, peach, mint, lilac and pink.pop-of-colour-yellow-interior-design-trend-2017Pops of Strategic Colour

Money-saving tips for your autumn wardrobe

Finding the perfect style to suit your everyday life can be difficult, especially when you need to save money. Whether you work in an office, as a shop assistant or are a student most people like to put a little effort into their daily outfits, with an increasing amount of cash being handed over to get the latest trends. However, it is likely that a new £50 sweater is made in the same factory that produces a £10 version. This does make you wonder if it is truly worth it to splash the cash on an item with a label. So, just what are the thrifty tricks to create the ultimate look without breaking the bank?

Accentuating accessories

Let us start with the basics. You only need a few items in your wardrobe to be able to create a variety of gorgeous looks. A white shirt, for example, can be styled from something plain to a head-turning top. The clue is to be creative with your accessories as they are a lot cheaper than clothes, so are ideal for being a thrifty fashionista. A leather belt and a chunky necklace go a long way with a white shirt to create a great multi-purpose look. It’s great as a working daytime look suit or could be made more casual with jeans and boots for a girls’ night out.styling-a-white-shirt-with-accessories

Selective shopping

Another factor to be considered on the journey to crafting a thrifty look is choosing where to shop. Charity shops and supermarket clothing isles can be a treasure trove of fashion goodness. You never know when you will find a bargain buy so keep on the lookout for when you’re getting your food shopping! I found a fantastic vintage section in my local charity shop and all of the items were priced at less-than high street prices. Plus the money goes to a good cause so that’s a great place to start when you’re looking for a few unique items to funk up your basics. Plenty of thrifty resale sites (such as Depop, Gumtree and Shpock) keep popping up on the web so browse these sites to find bargain fashion buys. cassiefairy article charity shop vintage and retro rail

Tuesday Shoesday – Sun, sea & shoes

The school half term holidays are over and we’re finally entering the last term of the year. That means only one thing; the countdown to the summer holidays has begun! The last week has been rather grey and drizzly here but, as if by magic, today the sun is shining and it’s the warmest weather we’ve seen in weeks. It’s as if the world knows that summer is on its way and is making us all look forward to our impending holidays.2015 summer holiday beach essential beauty fashion products-29I’m really looking forward to the summer this year. I’m hoping for lazy walks along the coast, delicious fresh lunches and lots of excuses to wear floral dresses and pretty pumps! In fact, the new season has inspired my blog post today because I’ve been searching for the ideal summer shoes. I want just one pair that will go with everything. I don’t think I’m being unreasonable with that request – I simply want a pair of shoes that I can slip on every day and don’t have to think about what to wear so I can spend more time outdoors enjoying my summer. But is it possible? Let’s find out…2015 summer holiday beach essential beauty fashion productsSo the shoes need to be 1) comfortable 2) low cost and 3) on trend. They also need to look great with dresses on sunny days and look equally as good with a pair of jeans when the sun goes behind the clouds. The trouble with the Great British Summer is that I can’t guarantee that we’ll have any good days of weather, and it would be just typical if the time I’m taking off work would be one of those grey weeks! Tuesday Shoesday – Knee-high v ankle boots

It’s the age-old question: knee-high or ankle? Which type of boots do you prefer? If you only had the money to buy one pair of boots to last you forever, which would you choose? Come on, no sitting on the fence: these boots were made for walking, so which pair will it be? To tell you the truth, I’m undecided. Which is precisely why I decided to compare the two today, and to hopefully find out which is the ‘ultimate’ length for a pair of classic black boots.tuesday shoesday knee high boots v ankle boots blog reviewTest 1 – Wearing with dresses

It really depends what kind of look you’re going for however I tend to lean towards knee-high boots in this test. They made legs look slimmer and make small feet look bigger, thereby balancing out your hips. They can be worn with or without tights and can either make casual dresses look dressier, or formal dresses look more relaxed. I just prefer having my calves covered when wearing a skirt with a pair of flat boots: I feel like I look less ‘stumpy’ with knee-highs compared to a flat pair of ankle boots. Even so, ankle boots will work with dresses too – 90s grunge and the look I call ‘blogger chic’ relies heavily on ankle boots with skirts. Remember Doc Martens, 40 denier tights and button-up floral dresses? And that was just me last year..! Hoho I jest of course – that was my favourite 90s look – but I still hanker after it even now at my age. Ankle boots and tights are a rebellious combo. In fact, thinking about it, knee-high boots are rather rebellious too. Argh, it’s a tough one to call.

tuesday shoesday knee high boots v ankle boots review-3Test 2 – Wearing with trousers

Of course, if we’re talking ‘normal’ width trousers, ankle boots will come out on top every time. You can go tucking a standard pair of trousers into knee-high boots: it’ll look like you’re wearing pantaloons. That is unless Puss-In-Boots is your style icon. In this case, ankle boots are a must for wearing beneath trousers, and are especially good with a heel that gives you extra height and allows your trouser leg to hang properly. However, if we’re talking skinny jeans, knee-high boots quickly gain the lead. Again, ‘blogger chic’ means that skinny jeans can be tucked into ankle boots (with a heel preferably), but I’m sure we can all agree that skinny jeans tucked into knee-high boots is a timeless look, can’t we? Again, they take your casual jeans and turn them into something that’s suitable for wearing on a night out. Which takes us nicely onto test 3…

Tuesday Shoesday – What shoes to wear with the cropped denim trend

Cropped jeans are everywhere right now. And it’s no surprise really. They’re ideal for those Spring days when it’s too chilly for a skirt or shorts but sunny enough that you want to show some skin. So are just perfect at this time of year. But how on earth do you wear this kind of length? I remember wearing a lot of cropped trousers around the turn of the century (that sounds soooo historical – but I mean the 2000s not the 1900s!) and I’m not sure I got away with it back then.cropped denim spring fashion trend shoes tuesday shoesday inspiration from trilogy stores sandals

One brand who’ve nailed the cropped denim S/S16 look is Trilogy Stores

Okay, ‘youngsters’ tend to get away with fashion trends more and back in the 00s I was definitely a ‘youth’. Even so, it wasn’t the best look on 5ft 2inch me. So I’m not sure that I’m any more likely to look good in the cropped denim trend now, after adding 16 years and no additional height. Which is why I wanted to take a look at footwear that would suit the trend and perhaps find a way of wearing a cropped length that doesn’t make me look too stumpy or ‘try-hard’. Here’s what I came up with:cropped denim spring fashion trend tuesday shoesday inspiration from trilogy stores

I think I prefer cropped denim with ankle boots Trilogy stores.

Ankle boots are definitely an important part of getting this look just right. They are the footwear of choice on colder days when you don’t want to match the stonewashed blue shade of your jeans to your chilly blue toes. You can keep warm with some cosy socks underneath those funky boot and, if they’re high enough, even tuck the cropped trousers into the top of the boots to lock the warmth in. Okay, that probably defeats the idea of wearing cropped jeans, but at least you’ve got that option when the wind starts whipping around your ankles. Boots keep the look practical with a sensible heel height and you can stride through puddles with a ‘lets get on with it’ sense of abandon. Bonus fashion points are earned by flashing a slither of skin between the top of the boot and the bottom of the cropped denim. This shows that you actually ARE doing the cropped trend and that the-cold-never-bothered-you-anyway.cropped denim spring fashion trend heels court shoes tuesday shoesday inspiration from trilogy stores

Tuesday Shoesday – Oscars 2016: Get the look for less

Each year it gets harder and harder to pick out the hottest shoe trends at the Oscars. Why? Because of all the floor-lengths gowns, of course! Those award-winning actresses are doing a grand job of picking out the perfect pair of shoes to complement their outfit and then hiding them away underneath their drag-along-the-floor dress. Next year, could we all pleeeeease embrace the 60s miniskirt look instead? That would make my job much easier, thanks!

Anyway, you’ll be pleased to know that I HAVE been able to find some glamorous glimpses of footwear on the red carpet. So today I wanted to share with you some of the lookalike versions of these very glitzy heels, so you can get the look for less yourself at much more purse-friendly prices.silver shoes asos oscars 2016 lookalike heelsThe first pair that caught my eye was worn by award winner Alicia Vikander who sported a pair of metallic silver sandals with a clear block heel on the red carpet. She later scooped the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Danish Girl so I bet she was thrilled to be wearing a princess-style Beauty And The Beast-esque gown and matching silver accessories while the whole of Hollywood watched. The metallic lookalike shoes I found for this look are from ASOS (currently half price at only £19) and will be a wardrobe staple this year. Strappy metallic shoes were spotted time-and-again on the red carpet – Rachel McAdams wore a similar pair below – so are definitely a solid trend for eveningwear in 2016.rachel mcadams oscars 2016 silver shoes green dress

Rachel McAdams also wore a similar pair of strappy silver heels at the 2016 Oscars. Rex Shutterstock

Kerry Washington popped a cheeky foot out of her daring leather Atelier Versace gown as she posed on the red carpet. I guess she wanted to show off those classy Gianvito Rossi heels, and who wouldn’t want to? They are the kind of shoes that would go with any outfit so would be a good investment for special occasions. Of course, there are ways to get a pair at a lower price – shop on the high street!

I found these timeless black court shoes in New Look for just £17.99 and I think that the suede finish and supportive strap (missing from Kerry’s red carpet look – she must have been hobbling a lot!) are just the thing for wearing to special events. Even though they are a classic style, that doesn’t mean they’re boring shoes – these heels cover just the toes and expose a lot of skin, so they’re a rather slinky option too!new look shoes oscars 2016 black trendAnother actress who proved really helpful in my search for shoes was Lily Cole. This good ol’ gal picked a dress with a shorter hem at the front so there are tons of photos of her feet out there on the internet. These strappy gold sandals contrast with her silver Vivienne Westwood dress, whichwas actually made from recycled plastic bottles. Loving the idea of sustainable fashion like this on the red carpet – go for it Lily!

It’s been rather hard to find a similar pair of gold-leaf heels on the high street but when I turned to the internet I found plenty. There were actually TOO MANY pairs of glitzy gold shoes to choose from but I finally decided to pick this pair. My dupes for this look are from ASOS at £25 and are ideal for recreating that gold-shoes-and-silver-dress look for yourself. I think these shoes would be good ‘wedding guest’ heels for the summer as well as for nights out.asos gold shoes strappy heels oscars trend 2016

What do you think of the lookalike shoes that I found this year? I love checking out the red carpet looks from the Oscars because it usually gives a great insight into what trends will be hot during the coming year. Which looks will you be recreating at home yourself during 2016? Let me know by leaving me a comment below or tweeting me photos of your Oscar lookalike shoes to @Cassiefairy.

Tuesday Shoesday – Payday party style on a budget

It can be hard to find the right pair of party shoes to suit your overall style. You want them to be on-trend yet timeless, match your party outfit but go with everything, and ultimately, be comfortable enough to dance the night away. But where can you find all of that on a thrifty budget? Don’t worry, you’re not alone – I’m here to help! I’ve come up with some fail-safe tips to make your money go further while shopping for footwear this payday so read on to find out how to buy your dream footwear at bargain prices. Just call me your fairy godmother! 😉

First up are the bargains. The absolute steals. The very last of the January sales. Yes, it may seem like there’s not much left on the sale shelves by payday, but the deals are still out there. You just need to know where to look. The ethos of the #WomanKind campaign I’ve signed up for is to care for yourself, and I’m not just talking about healthy eating and getting exercise (although I’m certainly enjoying this aspect too), I’m talking about simply being kind to yourself. So treating yourself to something that will make you feel great is definitely part of it! As they say, Cinderella is proof that a pair of shoes can change your life, so I think that getting the right footwear is a great start to feeling confident, looking fabulous and being kinder to yourself. Luckily, at lot of fashion sales are still going strong online so you don’t need to wander up and down the high street hoping to find a bargain in order to give yourself a payday treat. Try Mr-Shoes, ASOS and Clarks, all of whom are still offering big discounts in their clearance sections.his and hers shoes mustard and rust from clarks summer sale 2015-2One problem with searching online is that the style you love might already be out of stock in your size. So try not to fall head-over-heels in love with anything you find in the sales just yet. Dig deeper and check out what sizes are available before deciding whether they are your ideal pair. Some fashion sites allow you to filter your search by size, so that’ll save you time by pulling up all the footwear in the right size for you so you can concentrate your efforts into choosing the right style. Speaking of which…tuesday shoesday nude peep toe wedge heel summer shoes 2013 from nextMy second thrifty tip is to only buy something if you know you’ll wear it more than once; the ‘go-with-anything’ factor. If you choose a glittery pair of ruby red shoes (okay, who doesn’t want those?!) they might look fabulous for one night out, but what about the rest of the month? Or the rest of the year, for that matter? Something that matches your outfit perfectly today probably won‘t be the right pairing tomorrow, so they’ll end up stuffed under the bed or at the back of the wardrobe, not being worn. 5 style taboos your man should ignore

One of the constant things about fashion is that it changes all the time. One season we hate baggy jeans and the next season slouchy ‘boyfriend’ jeans are a must-have item. Naturally, men fashion changes as well and over the years we’ve witnessed many men’s style taboos being broken by designers who don’t care about outdated ‘rules’. Here are the top five fashion ‘sins’ that men no longer have to avoid and, in fact, should be actively encouraged to wear to help them look gorgeous this autumn/winter.menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket layered warm outdoor forest autumn winter-61. Double denim
Remember the days when denim-on-denim was considered a sin? Well, times have changed and now those that can pull denim-on-denim off are considered the bravest fashionistas out there. The trick is usually to mix different shades and colours in order to get the best effect. For example, get your man black denim jeans and combine them with a grey denim jacket or blue denim shirt. The result is usually amazing and you won’t be able to take your eyes off your fashionable for men - double denim2. Blue and green should never be seen
Oh come on, this is such an outdated taboo, that it shouldn’t even exist anymore. In any case, many designers have included navy blue and green combinations in their latest collections, so this is the right time to see how these two colours suit your other half. If you don’t want to push it too far, you can simply motivate him to put on blue trousers in combination with a green sweater or jacket. The bravest can try adding shirt in a different shade of green or even mix another colour in the combination such as brown or for men - blue and green3. Forget florals
There were times when pants weren’t considered feminine and that didn’t stop us from wearing them. So it’s time to be fair to your guy and let him enjoy some florals. These are extremely popular and plus they really suit guys when worn with a smart jacket or cool jeans. If you want your man to have his own unique style, which would make him stand out from the mass of men in white or black shirts, then you should make him buy something with floral design. I am a bigger fan of floral shirts than floral trousers and jackets; nevertheless, you can see what suits your partner the best and go for it. Believe me, you won’t regret it and he’ll love for men - floral patterns

Autumn/Winter Menswear – Styling a tweed jacket three ways

With the Autumn/Winter season in full swing, I thought that today would be a good time to share a menswear styling post with you. As you know, I’m a rather thrifty girl and I like to come up with ways to style my clothing to create many different looks from just one special piece. I believe that there’s no such thing as separate summer and winter wardrobes and I’ve always found that just adding a few accessories or extra layers allows me to take an item of clothing throughout autumn, into winter and on into the new year, dressed up in a different way for spring/summer. So today I wanted to show you how this can work for a man’s wardrobe too, so that he can make the most out of the clothes he invests in and bring down that all-important ‘cost-per-wear’ price!menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket casual beach autumn winter menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket layered warm outdoor forest autumn winter-6 menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket smart autumn winter-8I’ve taken one key piece – a classic tweed jacket – and have come up with a few different looks for the autumn/winter season; from casual still-warm days, to a layered look for chilly November and on to a smart style for festive parties in December. If you’re a man reading this, welcome! I hope you’ll be able to get some ideas from this autumnal photo-shoot and that this post will help you get the most from your favourite items of clothing simply by styling them up with a few different items from your wardrobe. And if you’re a woman, this is for you too: a tweed jacket works in the same way for you too, so recreate similar looks for autumn with your own clothing. And if you’ve got a man in your life, you can use these ideas to show him how to dress up one piece to make it work for three very different occasions. For each style we’ve used a Heritage Tweed Jacket from Samuel Windsor in ‘Border Check’ and added a few extra items for each look.menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket casual beach autumn winter-9 menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket layered warm outdoor forest autumn winter-13 menswear mens fashion styling a tweed jacket smart autumn winter-6 Continue reading “Autumn/Winter Menswear – Styling a tweed jacket three ways” »
