Retro living room inspirations ~ lighting

Collaborative feature

If you’ve been following my interior design series for my mid-century modern living room over the past few months, you’ll know how keen I am on retro design and how I am trying to recreate a swish designer look on a budget – check out some of my previous articles using the links below! Although I’d love to source lots of genuine 60s and 70s furniture and accessories for my home, sometimes the price is a little out of my budget, and often it’s just too difficult to find the rare items that I love so much. So I’m aiming to invest in modern versions of original items to get the look by mixing genuine vintage (such as my orange arm chair and teak furniture) with new accessories. Here is my original mood-board and I’m pleased to say that things are heading in the right direction!

Today I’m focusing on lighting and finding a ‘design-classic’ lamp that will add a stylish element to my otherwise garish orange-and-brown (and olive green!) living room. Do you remember the article I shared about fantastic lighting designer Artemide back at the start of the year? This is one of my favourite designers from the era  – the brand was formed in 1950 and  won their first award for their famous Nesso Lamp (below) in the 60s. You can probably guess from this image why I like it so much – there is nothing subtle about these lamps!

Ever since I first learned about this designer when I began researching my living room design, I have been swooning over the gorgeous shapes and colours of the Artemide range, and although I know I would never be able to get a genuine vintage lamp, I am pleased to hear that Artemide are still creating amazing designs and that I can buy brand new lamps and light fittings online from stylish shops such as LampCommerce. So I’ve spent a pleasing couple of hours picking out my wish list of gorgeous lighting products and here are my favourites (Maybe someone will get me a LampCommerce gift voucher for my birthday! ):

Although my mid-century living room ‘makeover’ has been taking quite a long time to complete, I really don’t think that I’ll ever be ‘done’ because there will always be another Hornsea jug that I’ll pick up at a carboot sale, or a bargain item of brown glass that I just can’t leave in the charity shop, so I expect it will continue to grow and develop over the coming years and, really, that’s part of the fun of it – having something to look for while rummaging through junk shops and vintage markets!
