Getting a helping hand in the kitchen

After the frenzy of baking activity in my home over the festive period, my mind is in no doubt that I need some new gadgets in my kitchen to make my life just that little bit easier. Ok, a couple of times, I had a helping hand with my Christmas cooking in the form of my surprisingly-cheffy husband, but due to the tiny kitchen space we were working in, it was sometimes more of a hinderance than a help! When whisks went flying and bowls of goop splatted onto the floor moments before guests were due to arrive, I promised myself a few kitchen-based treats in the new year to make up for all the stress.

Treat number one is a food mixer. And more specifically a Kitchen Aid. A couple of the ladies in my life have recently invested in proper Kitchen Aid appliances and I have never been more jealous of something so practical! I know that the price of some of these glamourous gadgets is similar to what I paid for my little car, but you can bet it’ll never break down in your moment of need while you’re trying to mix up icing for your gingerbread men… The ladies that I’m speaking of were already the best cooks I’d ever encountered (here’s a photo of some of their past creations above) but I’m certain that their new Kitchen Aids have stepped up their baking ability to the next level already. The Great British Bake-Off better watch out, these women are armed and ready to whip! So you can understand my massive sigh when my electric hand whisk stops working again and maybe you too have felt those swoons of delight when you oggle those glitzy do-it-all appliances while wandering around the Harrods homewares section? I love it, and am saving up as we speak.

The second treat is a massive Paella pan that hubby and are were lucky enough to buy in the January sales using a gift voucher we’d received for Christmas. It’s huge yet it can fit in our oven as well as being ideal for using on a barbecue or over a firepit (the next thing on the list!). I love paella and my husband loves large cooking pans, so we’re both happy with this new addition to our kitchen and will no doubt be cooking more than just rice dishes in it – massive chilli con carne? yes! The world’s biggest pizza – you bet! Now we just have to figure out where we can store it…

I’m hoping that all the new additions to our kitchen will help me to become a better cook and possibly even make healthier choices in the future, but we’ll see. What kind of appliances or tools would make your life easier?
