Seasonal sewing projects for winter

Collaborative feature

While Christmas may be over for another year, I can’t help wishing that winter would stay around a little longer. Since the start of January it feels to me like the magazines are already talking about spring trends and shops are bringing out their summer ranges – even though it’s still cold and snowy outside! So I’ve turned to fabric to help me keep that wintery feeling alive for a couple more months, both in my home and through my crafting.

From traditional favourites like tartan fabric to bold, modern fabrics in wintery colours, there’s a soft and cosy winter fabric out there for every project. Wool textures and soft fleeces are perfect for everything from cushions for your home to personalised birthday or Valentine’s gifts.

While I love dressing up in festive patterns for Christmas, I prefer using textured winter fabrics to sew warm winter clothing throughout the rest of the season. Polar fleece and velour make great choices for jackets and if you’re looking for great material for gloves, polar fleece is one of the warmest choices. The weather always gets worse in the new year, so a couple of sewing projects to create boot-liners and gloves will be perfect for keeping your extremities warm during snowball fights!

You can use tartan in any colour to decorate your home for the upcoming Burns Night celebration at the end of January. The pattern and texture of traditional tartan blankets will keep your home looking cosy throughout the rest of the winter and can be used in your festive decorating next Christmas too. If you’re planning a Burns Night feast, your tablecloth and napkins can be given the Scottish treatment, and you could sew a tartan trim around homemade placemats to make the party feel very festive.

My new year’s resolution every year is to start sewing a quilt and I’ve never yet achieved it so I want to make a start on my festive patchwork now, in the hope that it’ll be finished by next December! I’ll be choosing cotton with Christmas patterns, as well as poplin with festive prints, in order to make throw to coordinate with my holiday décor next Christmas.

There are several major considerations to keep in mind when choosing fabrics for winter projects. While the colour and pattern are major considerations, you want to make sure that the texture is suitable for the project. You don’t want to use a type of fabric that is difficult to cut for a project that involves several pieces. Another major consideration is whether the fabric is easy to care for. You don’t want to use fabric that requires a lot of care if it ends up being subjected to spills throughout the year! To have the best possible selection, be sure to visit UK Fabrics Online and make your home feel cosy with some new soft furnishings this winter.
