Personal development – Which career is right for you?

Collaborative feature

It’s all about careers on the blog this week – did you spot my article last weekend all about learning as you earn?? I think it’s the whole ‘back-to-school’ feeling I get in September that makes me want to think about jobs, studying, careers and personal development. So today we’re finding out how you can tell if a job is right for you and whether or not you should pursue it as a future career.

Finding the right career is always a challenge, unless you make a clear plan to help you achieve your goals. It is important to find out what job will make you happy as well as successful. It is also helpful to know what types of jobs will match your skills and what is best suited for you. You can take tests to find this out or use a job search engine such as Jobrapido to help you in your job search and give you some ideas of jobs you might never have known existed!

One important thing to remember is that although your career is a set of plans and ideas, it’s not realistic to think of it as a linear path. Often we feel like we need to find our dream career straight away but most of the time different jobs will take us to our dream career.

It is always helpful to make a career path to try to follow or to map out your goals but sticking to it rigidly might limit you and stop you from making the most of new opportunities as they arise. That said, it will benefit you to have clear cut goals (as well as these possible transitions) mapped out. You can use the G.P.V formula to consider your Gifts, Passions, and Values to identify your strengths.

If you generally know what type of job you want it helps to talk to people in similar fields and find out how they began on their career path. Then, when you have maybe tried a few internships in that field, find a mentor to really help make sure you are on the right track and are working towards the right goals. You may even explore some unconventional careers in your search but it is always just as helpful to learn about what you do not like to do as it does to find out what your passion is. The most important thing is that you direct yourself towards a career that will make you happy and something that you are passionate about. Keep in mind what your strengths are, take a career test, and think about what energizes you!

Let me know how you are progressing in your chosen field by leaving me a comment below – have you recently changed roles? Have you started to study something new this September? Or did you fall into your dream job by chance? Let me know your plans and please share any advice on changing jobs or developing your career so we can all learn how to progress towards our dream jobs.
