If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll already know what a geek I am when it comes to maps. Old, new and anything inbetween – maps are intriguing, enticing and informative. I’m the kind of person who wanders over to information maps on footpaths or in city centres and looks like a total tourist, but really I’m just interested in the map itself. Why is it here? What’s nearby? Any special information? Someone has taken the time to make that map and put it there, so surely there’s a reason that’s worth investigating. So it probably comes as no surprise that I also love to have maps in my own home too, and that’s where Mapify comes in. Read on to find out more about my Valentine’s map and how you can win your very own personalised map created just for you by Mapify in my giveaway – and there’s THREE prizes to be won!Thankfully, my husband is equally interested in maps, so when there’s an museum exhibit of old relief maps in the Lake District, or an exhibition of Max Gill’s famous street maps at The Lettering Arts Centre we are first in the queue to see it. I guess we’re well suited to each other, eh? So what better gift could I get for my husband this Valentine’s Day than a personalised map? Well, I’m pleased to say that it IS possible to create your own map of any location throughout the whole world, and have a fantastic quality print on your wall in a matter of days. Mapify is the serviceI used to make this special gift, and here’s how I did it.
Firstly, I logged onto the Mapify.cc website and had a browse through the options. There are smart minimalist map designs that look great in a living room or office, or dark twilight versions that show roads and landmarks as if illuminated in a night sky – great for a bedroom or dining room. Of course, you’ll find maps of all the major cities on this website, or you can choose to create your own map of ANYWHERE in the world. Yes, really – anywhere. Whether it’s the smallest village, the biggest city or a whole county, you can create the ideal map for you.
If you’re buying the map as a Valentines gift why not consider a location that means a lot to you and your partner? It could be the place you first met, the location of your first home together or the town you got married in. My husband and I took our honeymoon in Paris, so this design with a red love-heart in the centre of the city makes the ideal Valentine’s Day gift. If you’re thinking of proposing to your sweetheart you could even do it via the map; as they unroll a map of the location of your first date, the personalised text at the bottom could read “Will you marry me?”. I’m already getting a little emotional at the thought! But these maps aren’t just for Valentine’s Day; any time you need a personalised gift these would be just the ticket. A map of the location that a couple got engaged would make an ideal wedding gift, and treating your mum to a map of the town she was born in will make her Mother’s Day. Give students a ‘back to college’ gift of a map of their university city to hang over the desk or club together with colleagues to create a special leaving gift for your work buddy. The possibilities are endless!
I actually ordered a map of Suffolk because I wanted to chart the location of our new home and I think it will look fantastic in my bedroom or office. Now that it has arrived and I’ve seen the high-quality print and the detail in the map I think I’m going to order a second map of Lancashire, which was our home for the many many years that we were students. I think that hanging the two framed maps side-by-side will look really smart and fit in well with my minimalist decor.Without further ado, here’s how you can win your very own personalised map with Mapify.cc. The lovely owners Lena and Alistair would like to give THREE lucky winners a gift voucher worth £39, which allows you to order a 50 x 70cm map of any location and have it personalised just for you. They’ll send you a preview of the map so that you can check all the details before it’s created and will ship a super-high quality print direct to your door.
