How to turn your photo into a giant feature wall mural

Have you ever taken a photo and thought to yourself, ”I wish I could print this out lifesize”? That’s exactly what I thought when my husband took an amazing shot of the sea last week. Well, I suppose my thought does have something to do with the fact that I’m currently decorating my bedroom and I’d been looking for some wallpaper for the feature wall.Having failed to find any wallpaper patterns or prints that I liked enough (that wouldn’t spoil the tranquil feeling of my all-white room) I was starting to think that our feature wall might just get a coat of white paint and be left bare. But when I was flicking through my photographer husband’s snaps from our Valentine’s Day walk on the beach, I came across dozens of images that would be ideal for a feature wall. Okay, I’d used a poster to cover my small bathroom wall with a seascape photo in the past, but how on earth can I possibly print out a photo that’s 2.8 x 2.5 metres in size?

After a little bit of investigating online I found a company who can do just that – print our photo as wallpaper, and to the exact dimensions of the wall. Hovia are specialists in printing large-scale artwork, patterns and images to create feature walls in your own home.If you’ve ever browsed Pinterest for feature walls you’ve probably already seen this company’s work; those big watercolour ink prints and marble effect walls. In fact, when I started browsing the collection on the website, I almost forgot why I was looking on the website in the first place! There are just SO many fabulous designs to choose from that it’s tempting to decorate every room with an oversized pattern or print of the universe.Nonetheless, I headed to the custom designs section of the website and sent over my requirements; a high-resolution colour image to be converted to black and white with a slight gradient on the sky, and printed to my precise to-the-millimetre measurements.

Within a couple of days I had received a proof document in my inbox, showing an image that looked exactly as I had imagined it. Viewing the image at the dimensions of the wall itself allowed me to imagine it in the room and I became even more excited to see it ‘in real life’. When the first proof came through I changed my mind about the gradient. Thank goodness for proofs, eh?! The sky looked too stormy with the added gradient so I emailed back to ask if I could revert to the original sky. Thankfully this wasn’t a problem and a had a second proof sent to me soon after. I checked this one and LOVED it. So here’s what my wall should look like:I’ll be sure to show you the mural when it arrives in the post next week and I’ll blog some photos of the installation process so that you can see for yourself how it works. In the meantime, let me know what you photo or pattern YOU would choose for a feature wall by leaving me a comment below. And please feel free to share some pointers with me if you’ve already installed wallpaper by MuralsWallpaper.co.uk yourself. Watch this space!
