Create a holiday-home inspired interior fit for a staycation

This little run of bank holiday weekends has got me thinking about the summer holidays – has it been the same for you too? If so, I thought I’d share a little staycation inspiration with you this week! I’d love to help you enjoy a holiday in your own home – after all, that’s what I do almost every year – and it’s definitely possible to achieve that holiday home atmosphere in your own house with the help of a few interior design tricks. Here’s how to get the look and enjoy a staycation break on a budget.Clean and tidy

I’m sure it’s the last thing you want to do if you’re having a break from work, but making the effort to tidy up your home before your holiday starts will make it a much more relaxing week off. The reason that holiday homes are just so lovely to stay in is that they are spotlessly clean and tidy. So take a leaf out of a holiday home owner’s book and give your house a once-over with the hoover. Put everything away – especially your work laptop – and polish your surfaces. Next time you enter the house it’ll look clean, smell fresh and there’ll be no chores to do while you’re taking a break at home.Spa-like bathroom

If you want to get that spa effect of a hotel bathroom at home, it’s simply a case of giving the bathroom a thorough cleaning. I can’t wait to prepare my own bathroom for a staycation now that my bathroom renovation project is progressing nicely. Hang a robe on the back of the door and put out your best fluffy towels – and if you need some new ones, treat yourself!

And while you’re at it, grab a couple of candles and a bath bomb to really make your bathroom a luxurious place to relax while you’re ‘on holiday’. And make sure that you actually do take time to lounge in a bubble bath with a glass of something fizzy. Pop on that face mask and stay in the bath until your fingers go wrinkly!New bedding

Now’s the time to invest in some lovely new sheets. Well, you are saving money by not going away on holiday aren’t you? Holiday homes have crisp, quality bed linen so either spruce up your own bedding with some new white pillow cases and fitted sheets or have go for a whole new look with a fresh new duvet set. When I saw this Oasis bedding design from Julian Charles I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it because the coastal colours are perfect for getting that holiday home vibe in my bedroom. Plus, it’s reversible, so all I need to do to get a completely different look is to flip over the duvet. Pile on layers of textured blankets and squishy cushions to get that cosy hotel bed feeling at home and be sure to lounge around reading a good book.Actually relax

Sometimes it’s hard to get into the swing of being on holiday when you’re staying at home during your annual leave so it’s important to plan out your week and ‘force’ yourself to relax. Holiday homes encourage this by placing books, films and games around the house, so now is the time to treat yourself to that novel you’ve been meaning to read. Spread out a some magazines on the coffee table to flick through while you relax on the sofa. Dig our your CD (or even better, vinyl!) collection spend some time listening to music and brewing tea. Or even just pop on the radio and listen to a whole show while browsing the newspapers in the morning. And don’t forget to have a lie-in!I hope these ideas and interior design tips have shown you that it IS possible to enjoy a staycation at home; you just need to trick yourself into believing you’ve gone away. One final tip is to plan a couple of day trips and become a tourist in your own town. Go to those museums you’ve always meant to visit, go for a dip in the local swimming pool and head to a nearby park for a picnic. Enjoy your staycation!

  1. Thanks for the “throw” bad news. 🙂 I figured it was not recent as I have hunted UK websites for throws and blankets. I think I was in a NEXT home store last summer.
Waiting patiently for the bathroom reveal. x

  2. Hi Lisa, thanks very much, I’m so pleased that you like this look 🙂 The checked throw in the photo is actually a massive scarf/pashmina from Next and I got it about 3/4 years ago (and a pink+ grey one too!) x

  3. Hi Cassie,
I love the blue coastal look you have . I really like the small squares side of the duvet. I still have not figured a “look” for our bedroom, light and bright but cosy is hard to do. I have been leaning more and more to the cool clear blues and navy these past few years but have not found any duvet that is right …neither patterned or solid. I do love throws and my eye caught the plaid/check one in the third last photo. Is it possible to get the brand name please. I was very lucky to be in England last summer to visit friends we had made while living there in the early 2000’s. That will date me for sure! 🙂
Anyway it was my second visit in 13 years and I hunt for throws and blankets ,did not manage to find the blues I was looking for this last trip and I was on a hunt. Brought home to Canada fabric some charity shop novels and a new carry on suitcase. 🙂 I enjoy your blog very much and am looking forward to more posts of the bathroom renovation.
Hoping to hear about that throw.

    Lisa
