How to entertain yourself when you’re home alone

Collaborative feature

As a freelance blogger and writer, I often find myself with time at home alone. Sure, I have a home office and should be getting on with my work, but when the evenings draw in and I’ve done all that editing, I need to step away from the computer and unwind. Otherwise I’d just carry on working until bedtime – I know myself too well.

But how can you keep yourself entertained when you’re home alone? What will stop me from turning that laptop back on and checking my emails for the next 4 hours? I’ve come up with a few ways to liven up my evenings and not really be alone at all…

Streaming

Streaming a box set or watching the lastest film upload is still one of my favourite activities to do when I’m home alone. But let’s do it properly, eh? Pull out the sofa bed, gather together blankets and cushions and dim the lights. Pop some microwave popcorn, pour yourself a glass of something fizzy and settle down for a Bridget Jones marathon.

Or is that just me? If you don’t want to be Netflix-ing alone, there are some twitter tribes (such as blogger group The Girl Gang) who settle down on certain days and times to enjoy watching a movie together. Join in with one of these evenings and you’ll have plenty of people to chat with on twitter while you’re watching.

Playing games

Sure, it might be difficult to play a game of Monopoly on your own the traditional way but it IS possible by playing online games. If you’re looking for a competitive kind of entertainment when you’re home alone there are a whole range of games that can be played online, such as card games or quizzes, and many of them allow you to interact with other players during the game.

This means you’re playing in real-time and with real people, so you have to keep your wits about you – some online games can get rather lively, I can tell you! Check out addictive apps like Draw Something; an interactive game of Pictionary that lets you draw and guess scenes with players from all over the world. It was one of my favourites until I spent a little too long playing it!

In the kitchen

Now, I love to cook but I rarely get enough time to make anything more than a jacket potato for my dinner. Okay, I love baking for Pieday Friday, but those blog posts are becoming few and far between (must try harder!) So, when I find myself with an evening to kill I love to try out a new recipe or learn a new cooking technique.

This is a fun task, because it involves nipping out to the shop for ingredients and, of course, you get to enjoy your food at the end of it. To be truthful, if I didn’t try a new recipe, I’d end up having spaghetti with butter and cheese just like I do every other time that I’m left to eat on my own, so it’s important for me to have a recipe in mind just to make sure I stay healthy! There are many bake-along tutorials on YouTube so you won’t need to feel like you’re cooking alone if you choose one of those tasty recipes to try.

I hope these ideas have given you some inspiration if you find yourself home alone this weekend. Please do let me know what activities you do to keep yourself entertained (and away from work emails!) when you’re on your own by leaving me a comment below.
