How to make moving as a family easier

Advertisement feature

Moving home is a difficult process to go through, and when you’ve got children to take into consideration too, the process is made that little bit harder. Here’s how you can make your family move an easy transition.

Packing

Packing seems like an endless bore. It’s not until you move that you realise how many belongings you actually own. Perhaps now is the time to have a clear-out and take some things to the charity shop? Try turning packaging into a fun game for all of you. A great way of doing this is to challenge your children by seeing who can pack their boxes the quickest, and offer a treat when all of their things are packed up. Make sure that they are able to keep their most prized and comforting possessions unpacked until the last minute so that they don’t feel uncomfortable.

Removal company

Rather than going through all the stress of moving your belongings to your new home, consider hiring a removals company to do all of the work for you and take the stress off you and your children on moving day. Some removal companies even offer packing and unpacking services too. This might be something you want to consider to take the pressure off your back, too!

A day out for the kids

When it comes to moving day, your children may be more unsettled than normal because they are having to say goodbye to their home, and if it’s the first time you have moved house it could be an even more difficult process for them. Taking them out for the day to keep their minds off what’s happening might be worth considering. If you’ve got to be at your new home for the removal companies, consider asking a family member or a friend to look after the children until you’re able to unpack their new home so it feels familiar to them when they come home. A fun activity to look forward to and lovely dinner out will make make moving day an exciting prospect for the little ones.

Unpacking

As briefly mentioned in the last point, unpacking as much as possible before the children come home would be a good idea so that they can return to a house that seems familiar, filled with your usual furniture and belongings. However, waiting for them to unpack their bedrooms themselves might be a good idea so that they can make it their own comfortable space.

Decorating

Even though the move may have put you a little out of pocket for the time being, making sure that the children are able to decorate their bedrooms is essential to making them feel more at home. You could do this by allowing them to pick out a wallpaper for their new bedroom, or their favourite coloured paint so that you can begin to personalise their rooms. It might also be a good idea to make a start on decorating and unpacking your living room too, since it’s likely that the family will spend a lot of quality time in there.

Moving can be made easier on the whole family by following these simple steps. Keeping children optimistic about the move is key to helping the process go much more smoothly.
