Thrifty festive fashion for Christmas parties

While it’s nice to look lovely for special occasions over the festive period, there’s no sense in buying an outfit that you’re only going to wear once. Surely you want to be able to wear your new clothes to that new years party, or for Saturday nights out and weekends away throughout the rest of the year, too?I’ve come up with some suggestions for accessories to make the most of your existing wardrobe and what pieces to choose if you want to wear your Christmas party outfit time and again. Step away from the Santa jumper..!

SEPARATES

One of my best money-saving tips when it comes to buying clothing for nights out, is choosing separates. Getting a top-and-skirt combo rather than a dress means that you’ll get much more wear out of the items individually than you would if it was a single piece. Choose a simple lace top in a black colour that you’ll know you can wear again with a blazer for afternoon tea, or team with a pair of skinny jeans for a casual night out with the girls. For the party season you can wear your lace top with a pretty organza skirt to make it into a truly glamorous cocktail dress. And don’t forget that the skirt can be re-worn with a cosy cashmere jumper on Christmas day too. These separates are from Coast and there’s plenty of lengths and styles to choose from so you’ll be sure to find something that will work for another occasion and can be re-worn in the future.

ACCESSORIES

The best way to glam up an outfit for Christmas is with accessories. Take a dress that you already have in your wardrobe and add a glitzy necklace in jewel colours to turn it into something suitable for a special festive occasion.Shoes, of course, also have the power to transform an outfit from daytime to party-time. This is especially important if you’re heading straight from the office out to a festive gathering. Just slip on some sparkly heels (yes, you WILL wear them again, honest!) and change over to a clutch bag to turn any pencil-skirt and top combo into a party piece.

BASICS

If you really want to invest in a new outfit, why not make it something that you can get a lot of use out of during the year. Do you wear a dress to the office? Then why not look out for smart dresses for work that you can also wear to that festive party? If you choose a dress that isn’t too glitzy and is in a colour that will suit your day-to-day work wardrobe you’ll get maximum cost-per-wear value from it. A classic blazer is always a good shout as your cover-up for a festive party as the tailoring will certainly work when you get back into the office too. And you just know you’re going to get chilly while waiting for the taxi home!
