Cruelty-free beauty: What can egg whites do for your skin?

Did you know that besides being good for your dietary health, eggs—specifically, egg whites—can also be great for your skin? Read on to find out how…The chicken egg has always been recommended by doctors, nutritionists and dietitians alike as an essential part of a healthy diet. Not only does it have a good chunk of the recommended daily allowance of protein and dietary cholesterol, but it also comes packed with a lot of healthful vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that you’ll have a hard time getting anywhere else. Combine this with the fact that it’s one of the cheapest and most available sources of nutrition anywhere today, and you’ve got yourself a winning combination.

EGG WHITES AS SKIN FOOD

It’s true, and the truth lies in the nutrients that you get by ingesting eggs. Eggs are rich in dietary protein. Protein, as we all know, builds muscle – but it’s also great for combating skin inflammation and signs of ageing (such as wrinkles, visible pores, and facial lines). This is why a lot of topical skincare products have protein as a major ingredient.

Then there’s collagen, which egg whites are also rich in. Collagen helps with the many signs of skin ageing, and contributes to the skin tightening and wrinkle-removing effect that the protein in eggs have. Moreover, like protein, collagen also helps fill in facial lines when applied in a topical fashion, such as in a facial mask mixture. These two nutrients in egg whites therefore make it one of the cheapest and most effective skincare treatments you can use. And it’s a cinch to prepare as well—just crack a few eggs into a bowl, carefully separate the egg whites from the yolks, and then beat the egg whites with a fork or an automatic mixer or egg beater.

Keep beating until the egg whites becomes fluffy white foam (which should also make it perfect for baking). From there, simply apply the foam liberally to your face and let it sit until it dries. Rinse everything off afterwards and marvel at how much healthier and more vibrant your skin looks in the mirror.

POTENTIAL ISSUES

As great as egg whites are for skin care, there are a few things you need to be wary of, especially when making your own facial mask mixture with raw egg whites. First of all, raw egg whites have quite a bit of Vitamin A in them. This is great if you’re just having them in your meal, but applied topically egg whites can cause acne breakouts, especially on those with sensitive skin.

Those already allergic to eggs may also suffer an allergic reaction to egg white facial masks, so be sure to check with your doctor or dermatologist before trying out an egg white treatment. Finally, using raw egg whites could result in a skin bacterial infection, especially if the eggs have gone bad or were harvested from an unsanitary source.

ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF EGG WHITES SAFELY AND EASILY

Despite all those potential downsides—and I do mean potential, as many skincare-conscious people do use raw egg facial masks daily and without suffering adverse effects—there IS a way to enjoy the topical benefits of egg whites safely and easily.

This is through using commercially-available egg white skincare products that have been especially formulated and packaged for this exact purpose. Some examples that come highly recommended include the Skinfood Egg White Pore Mask, as well as the Skinfood Egg White Perfect Pore Cleansing Foam. By using these products instead of making your own egg white skincare products, not only do you get all the skincare benefits of egg whites safely and hygienically, but you also won’t have to forsake your daily breakfast for it.
