This year, many Brits are vowing to live healthier and be more active by spending time outdoors. Not only do you get to have quality time with your family, but you also get to enjoy the full benefits of being out in nature. Here are a few ways to enjoy the great outdoors on a tight budget…
In a study of 2,000 adults, four in 10 people plan to spend more time outdoors in green spaces in order to live a balanced lifestyle. While going on a 10-day camping holiday around the UK or going on an African safari are some of the things that outdoorsy people would like to accomplish, doing any of these activities can do a number on your wallet, especially if you’re travelling as a family. While you can certainly go camping on a budget, there are other things that you can do to spend time outdoors with your loved ones without dipping into your savings.
1. GO ON A DAY HIKE
There are lots of trails and hiking routes in the UK where your family can go on a hike. The best part? It’s free—no need to pay fees to go walking and enjoy the fabulous scenery. Prepare to spend the entire day outdoors by being well-equipped for a day hike. You will need to wear appropriate footwear and clothing and bring a rucksack for your supplies. Plan on bringing a folding trekking pole or hiking stick to increase traction on loose rock or tricky surfaces and to deflect thorny plants or bushes in your path. You should also bring a first aid kit, some water, and a few snacks to keep your energy up.
2. HAVE A PICNIC AT THE PARK
If you live near a park, beach or a public garden, then you can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine by having a picnic with your family. Pack a picnic basket with food and drinks that everyone will enjoy. Don’t forget to bring a blanket or an old rug that’s big enough for everyone to sit on. To work up an appetite, play a game of Frisbee or football, or try to fly a kite if the weather is right for it.
3. GO GEOCACHING
If you want to go on an adventure, try geocaching. It’s a family activity that doesn’t cost anything. All you need is a GPS-enabled device such as your mobile phone and Internet access. Log into any geocaching app or website and enter your zip code, and a list of nearby geocaches will appear. Pack a few snacks, a few tiny things to leave behind such as little toys or drawings, then get your kids and walk or drive to the nearest geocache site. Once you find a cache, you can trade in one toy or a drawing for anything inside it.
With a little creativity and a sense of adventure, you can certainly find ways to enjoy the great outdoors without spending a fortune. Try any of these activities to help your family live an active and healthy lifestyle in 2018 as you spend quality time together.
