5 Easy bathroom updates on a budget

Collaborative feature

Think you’re stuck with your old, dingy bathroom until you have thousands of pounds to spend on a full remodel? That doesn’t have to be the case! Even if you’re sticking to a budget, you can do the following projects yourself to refresh your bathroom without breaking the bank…

PAINT

Nothing does the trick like a fresh coat of paint. If you want to bring a new look to your bathroom, pick a statement colour to paint the walls of your room. If you’re on a really tight budget, pick one accent wall to paint in a bright colour and draw focus in the room (usually the wall with the mirror works best). If you’re painting all four walls, you may want to go for a softer shade, such as a pastel green or blue. These colours reflect light well and can help brighten up your room, making it feel more airy and larger than it really is. Just be sure to pick a type of paint that holds up well to moisture. Not only will it do well with steam from the shower, but you also will be able to wipe down the walls with cleaning products, which is especially helpful if you have kids.

SOFT FURNISHINGS

Just like with every other room in the house, you can transform the look of the space with new soft furnishings. In a bathroom, this will specifically be the towels, shower curtain and floor mats you use. Opt for a patterned design, which will update in your bathroom in the same way that adding wallpaper to a living room would. Or choose single-colour towels and accessories in vibrant hues to change the whole look of a plain white suite.

HARDWARE AND FIXTURES

Another easy upgrade is to replace the hardware and fixtures throughout your bathroom. If your storage drawers and cabinets don’t have handles (or the handles are severely outdated), install new ones that fit the aesthetic you’re going for. A classic, plain silver is always a good choice, but you may want to go for something more modern with colourful ceramic knobs or a unique shape.Your next step is to take a look at your plumbing hardware. New taps sparkle and shine like only a new bathroom can and aren’t difficult to change. Again, you can go for a traditional silver spout and handles, or you can go for a matte black (on-trend for 2018) chrome or copper. If you really want your bathroom to feel luxurious, purchase a new shower head that makes it seem like you’ve stepped into a spa. Look for one that has different settings for when you want a soft rain-shower feel or need something with a little more power behind it.

SPLASHBACK

Add some colour or texture into your bathroom by installing a splashback behind your bathroom sink. You can get easy-to-install tiles at most DIY stores and simply paste the tiles onto your wall. To stick to your budget, only add a single line of new tiles just above your bathroom sink, rather than tiling the whole wall. Make sure the tiles fit with the aesthetic of your shower curtain and paint colours. After all, the whole point is to complement the other pieces of your bathroom and add a little texture.

STORAGE

Storage can make all the difference when it comes to how you feel about your bathroom. Instead of throwing things under the sink or in a messy drawer, it’s time to get organized. Buy plastic or wire baskets that fit the dimensions of your cupboards to store your everyday items, such as toothpaste, brushes and makeup. Upcycle spice racks and hang them on one wall to hold your nail polish or toiletries. Use floating shelves to display pictures, a potted plant or small bathroom items. Your storage solutions are only limited by your creativity, so don’t put up with the mess any longer! What do you think of these quick and easy bathroom updates? It just goes to show that you don’t have to tear out the tub or buy expensive tiles to make your bathroom look gorgeous! The small things can make a big difference and let you spend your hard-earned money on more important things. Got any other ideas for refreshing your bathroom? 1. Thanks, the Wilko tile paint has been up for about a year and hasn’t bubbled or scratched, it worked better than I thought it would.

  2. Wow I’m so impressed with your project Lynn, such a great result with only a tiny budget! I’ve always wondered if tile paint really works but your bathroom looks great!
