Weddings on a budget – How to find a low-cost cake

A wedding cake is an important part of a traditional wedding reception, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a small fortune on something you’re going to eat! Here’s how to find a low-cost cake for your celebration…Wedding season is just around the corner. All those little details that mean so much will become monumental tasks that take up a lot of time – and money! With the movement to make cakes bigger and better, these masterpieces can cost hundreds, even thousands. If you are doing your wedding on a strict budget, you may want to check out some alternatives to these edible artworks! Trying to find cheap places for wedding cakes can be a mundane task. Thankfully, there are many options you can choose from that will give you what you want at a price you can afford.

IN THE US – SAFEWAY

While many of the American ‘big box’ stores tend to stick with decorated half and full cakes, Safeway is one of the few that go all out for their brides and grooms. They provide various flavors as well as fillings and their budget-friendly wedding cake options are perfect for smaller weddings. To accommodate a 250-person reception, you could make a three-tier cake yet still, your costs would be under $225 for all the cakes, which is almost unheard of when serving so many people. Check out CakesPrices.com for more pricing information on cakes in the US.

IN THE UK – ASDA or TESCO

Chances are, you have an ASDA or Tesco close to home. In some areas, there may be more than one. Everybody knows that these supermarkets have a deli and bakery but what you may not know is that you can find wedding cakes on the shelves. Sure, they ship in a lot of their goodies pre-made, but that doesn’t mean you can’t whip up something on the spot. Choose a couple of their plain white iced cakes in different sizes and connect them with pillar supports to make a tiered cake. Buying multiple cakes means you can buy the just right amount to serve the number of people at your wedding, so nothing will be wasted. If you stroll through the bakery, you might even find a cake-printing station, where you can personalise icing with a pretty pattern or even a photographic design. And, if you love the idea of cupcake towers, you can pick up countless little cupcakes in the supermarket to construct your own display.

EVERYWHERE – COSTCO

One of the best cheap places for wedding cakes is wholesale trader Costco. Now, if you don’t have your heart set on a stunning cake to wow the masses, then you should look at this option. They have one-size cake, and it will serve 48 people for under £20, so this is a great way to save money. Of course, there are other places you can go for bulk-buying your wedding food, so sign up to wholesale store like Booker and Makro to browse their cake selection

EXTRA COST-CUTTING IDEAS

I’ve mentioned having a dessert table rather than a wedding cake in the past, so have a read of my homemade cake buffet blog post for more thrifty wedding inspiration. You can also save some money on the cake decorations and use edible flowers instead of icing. Or you could decorate the plain white cakes with dots of white icing, wrap ribbon around them, or paint on diluted food colouring for an on-trend watercolour effect. I spotted this doughnut cake above on Pinterest and thought this was a great idea for a super-low cost – yet still impressive! – wedding cake.

Let me know what thrifty, cost-cutting methods you used to source a wedding cake on a budget in the comments section below. I’d love to hear your tips or find out where you got a bargain cake!
