2018’s style queens & how to nail the look

Every woman wants to look and feel good about what they’re wearing, and sometimes, all we need is style inspiration. To help you look like a style queen in every fashion season this year, I’ve pulled together the top three fashion icons for 2018 to help you get some style inspiration for every kind of occasion…

MEGHAN MARKLE

Since she’ll soon be wed to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s fashion choices are going to be under more press scrutiny than ever before. Young, stylish and confident, Meghan has long been a style icon for women across the world. However, possibly the most interesting aspect of her outfit choices is how they’ve transformed.

Most famous for her role in Suits, Meghan Markle has adapted and tweaked her fashion throughout her years in the spotlight. A few years ago, we’d often see her snapped in high heels, bandeau dresses, short skirts, and more daring necklines. But in 2018, she’s pushed these to the back of the wardrobe in favour of long, belted coats, simple ankle boots, and chic handbags to achieve an elegant vibe fit for a royal.

Some even say that Meghan’s style has adopted a ‘quintessentially English’ appeal in recent months. No more are the graphic tees and straight leg jeans — now, we have tailored blouses and laced midi dresses that evoke a sense of royal-appropriate sophistication. Then again, when she attended the Invictus Games with Prince Harry, she chose to wear simple jeans with a plain shirt, perhaps showing the world that she can still incorporate dressed-down looks despite her impending title.

NAIL THE LOOK

Of course, I’m not saying you should shy away from bold styles and bright colours — that’s not what Meghan’s style is about. Although her style has certainly matured, there are still bursts of chic provocation. Her sheer, gold-embroidered tulle and silk gown that she wore for her engagement portraits is just one example of her ability to infuse formal events with contemporary fashion.

Incorporate risqué style with touches of elegance to perfectly emulate the Meghan Markle look in 2018. For example, team shirt-dresses with low heels, off-the-shoulder tops with plain skinny jeans and flats, and low-cut blouses with cigarette trousers and a tailored blazer.

MARGOT ROBBIE

Margot Robbie’s fame and success are at an all-time high — and 2018 looks set to be another top year for the Australian actress. In just two years, Margot went from Neighbours cast member to global film star — but how has throwing her talent, character and fashion choices into the world’s harshest spotlight changed her style?

The Aussie lifestyle lives on in how Margot dresses for everyday occasions so remember this when you’re nailing her look. She blends casual-chic playsuits with Hollywood-ready dresses effortlessly. Take the plunging, gold slit dress she wore this year to the LA premier of I, Tonya, (below) compared to the long-sleeve, crew neck frock she donned for the Wolf Of Wall Street premiere in 2015 (above). Clearly, there’s been a growth in confidence and it’s this self-assurance that you can also adopt.

The actress is near flawless in how she can swap between fun, laid-back styles and uber-elegant choices. From lace jumpsuits and high-neck gowns, to polka dot dresses and belted tapered trousers; the essence of Margot’s style poses the idea that each occasion has a dress code, and you should simply dress for it to your own taste and to please yourself.

NAIL THE LOOK

The tone and type of occasion is Margot’s guide, which is how she always looks appropriately dressed wherever she goes. Trainers, logo tees and denims give off her signature, laid-back, Aussie-girl vibe when the occasion is low-key, while plain playsuits, kimonos, sandals, and asymmetric skirts reign supreme during dressed-up day events.

If you enjoy loose outlines and a mix of patterns and colours, Margot Robbie is the style queen for you in 2018. Wear clothes featuring floral prints and floaty silhouettes — such as drop-waist dresses, culotte jumpsuits and embellished gowns. In the evening, she tends to stay true to the accepted standards of glamorous fashion; don’t show both legs and arms at the same time and select garments featuring intricate embroidery, classic embellishments or eye-catching metallic finishes.

RIHANNA

Rihanna is one of the globe’s biggest music stars, and now, she’s gaining credibility for her fashion abilities, too. Her skill at predicting and pioneering styles, no matter how revolutionary, has propelled her to the highest echelons of celebrity fashion, which makes her one of the world’s top style icons to emulate for women around the world.

Rihanna’s status and style have changed massively since she burst onto the music scene in 2005. To begin with, many of her outfits gave the impression of a young, confident, sweet girl — think strappy dresses, rara skirts, crop tops, and boyfriend jeans. Within a few years, Rihanna edged her style to a more rebellious side, designed to enhance her ‘bad girl’ status. During this period, we saw bralettes paired with hot pants, and who could forget the revealing double denim, skirt-and-jacket outfit made famous by Rihanna’s dismissal of a tee or vest?

Of course, Rihanna wasn’t about to let her style stagnate. Following the ‘bad girl’ stage, RiRi merged these edgier trends with hints of high-fashion. Enter, the famous naked dress of 2014. Made of nothing but Swarovski crystals and fishnet fabric, the design of this iconic gown was overtly high fashion. After collaborations with Dior, Armani and Stella McCartney; 2018 promises to be another fantastic fashion year for Rihanna. Her athleisure clothing line, FENTY PUMA, is changing the goalposts of standard sports styles and taking athleisure into new territory, creating a high-fashion offshoot of feminine sportswear.

NAIL THE LOOK

Diverse colours and a mix of fabrics are the basis for the powerful Rihanna look. Over the years, we’ve seen her in everything from feather-embellished bejewelled bikinis to silk emerald tracksuits. To replicate it, you need to embody her confidence and sense of adventure. When emulating RiRi’s style, be bold, powerful and confident — and mix up your fabrics and colours as much as possible! Go for scarlet-coloured heels and a velvet playsuit or denim jumpsuit, then dress for the evening in something feminine, but out-there — like the lilac tulle mini dress she wore to Fenty Beauty’s launch party.

If you really want to replicate Rihanna’s look, get on board with the bare-shoulder trend. She loves shirts and coats that hang off her shoulders, so incorporate strapless tops and bralettes into your look to ooze the same level of seductive sophistication.
