Have you heard people talking about their bucket list and wondered what it was all about? Perhaps you’ve seen the famous movie and been pondering over creating a bucket list of your own. Anyone can have a bucket list and there are several reasons why you should make yours today. It can be long, short, extravagant or very simple. Whatever you decide to include it’ll be a great idea because it’s unique to you…

WHAT A BUCKET LIST WILL DO FOR YOU

  • Give you purpose – having goals in your life gives you something to reach for.
  • Provide focus – your bucket list will give you something to focus on and encourage you to use your free time productively.
  • Help with your direction – you’ll be guided towards new experiences in your life, which is always a good thing.
  • Set goals – having personal goals is important, and it doesn’t matter how much time they take to achieve.
  • Create memories – bucket list activities will provide you with memories that will last forever.
  • Discover more about yourself – who knows where a particular experience will lead? You might have a secret talent laying undiscovered.
  • Help you get through the bad times – if your life feels like it’s going nowhere get a list started and, as you tick them off, you’ll feel a sense of achievement.

HOW TO CHOOSE THINGS FOR YOUR BUCKET LIST

If you’re wondering where to start with your list, consider the following questions.

  • Is there something you’ve been longing to do but have been frightened to take the first step? Don’t be scared, give it a go.
  • Have you always wanted to learn something new? There are courses online for almost everything.
  • Do you have a favourite kind of scenery? Are you a mountain-lover or more at home by the sea?
  • Is there one experience you’ve always wanted to share with someone else? Go and share it with that special someone.
  • Is there a particular culture or cuisine you wanted to know more about?

If you find yourself with a list as long as your arm, you might want to narrow it down and combine some experiences, such as climbing a mountain while visiting another country. On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with having a much longer list of things you want to do, as long as those things are achievable. You may be worried about how you’ll be able to pay for some of your experiences but you can start saving now to build up a cash pot for experiences and, if you’ve got a goal in mind, you’ll be more likely to put that money aside. As you get older, releasing equity from your home is another option. Just ask yourself, “Where can money released from your home take you?” Perhaps it could help you take that trip of a lifetime to the Maldives or even a round-the-world cruise in your retirements.

Creating your very own bucket list is much easier than you think. The things you choose to do don’t have to be exotic or expensive. The ultimate goal of the items on your list should be to put a smile on your face. If you’ve longed to play the guitar, then enrol for classes and learn how to do it. If you want to spend time looking after animals, volunteer for a local charity. Don’t feel the need to include climbing Everest or diving for pearls if they’re not YOUR dream. It’s doesn’t have to be a finite list either – feel free to keep adding to it and creating new experiences and goals for yourself.
