If you enjoy scrolling through Instagram or pinning inspirational interiors, you can’t have escaped the interiors trend for styling up your home for autumn. No sooner had September hit than my feed was filled with pumpkins and autumnal vibes – inspirational stuff. But those beautifully styled interiors had 4 things in common, so here’s my cheat-sheet of essential items you need to bring that autumnal feeling into your home…

Can you believe how quickly the season has changed this year? Only last week it was blazing hot summer and today it’s grey, breezy and the leaves have already started to turn brown. I’m guilty of getting excited about autumn (and, eek, Christmas!) early, as I blogged about the new Scandi trend friluftsliv on the 1st of September. And after a rather grey week, I think those autumnal vibes are here to stay.

So if you’re planning to autumnify your home this season (okay, that might not be a real word), here are the 5 things that all gorgeously styled interiors need to get that cosy hygge look:

BLANKETS

I can’t even start to discuss autumn without thinking of blankets. Stacks of ’em. In all kinds of textures and autumnal hues. Layer them on your bed, drape them over the sofa and tuck them over your lap when you’re snuggled up in a reading nook. You NEED knitted throws and fleecy blankets to get that autumnal blogger style in your own home. Plus, they help keep your heating bills down by keeping you snug on the sofa or in bed, bonus! I’m including rugs in this section too, because I spotted a lot sheepskin rugs while browsing Pinterest for autumnal styling inspiration.

FLAMES

Just looking at a flame can make you feel warmer, can’t it? In the autumn, homes need to be styled with a blazing fire in the woodburner to create a cosy ambience. If you don’t have a fireplace, fear not! Candles are the next best thing and are SO hygge! If you’ve got pets or young children, LED candles have come a long way and now look very realistic. Plus, they’re safe to have around crisp autumn leaves and branches. You can even get remote controlled ones now – amazing!

SIGNS

So many beautifully styled mantelpieces and sideboard-scapes feature autumnal signs. Opt for an oversized metal letter (maybe “A” for autumn?) and surround it with vases of twigs strung with warm white fairy lights that’ll reflect off the aluminium surface. If you don’t have a suitable dresser or cabinet to display your sign, you could always hang a seasonal message on any wall (maybe your in the hallway to welcome in visitors?) using printable artwork in a magnetic hanger, attached to a removable sticky hook. If you’re decorating a mantlepiece or shelf you could spell out a seasonal message along the length of the surface using wooden letters. The wood grain adds warmth and will coordinate perfectly with the natural elements you’ll be bringing in from outdoors.

NATURE

Think pumpkins are too obvious? Nonetheless, they’re highly essential in creating an autumnal interior. As are fallen leaves, twigs arranged in vases, stacked logs and chestnut shells. Head to a local farm shop or market at this time of year to pick up plenty of unusual gourds and home-grown pumpkins. Bringing the outside in is a key part of friluftsliv so going for a woodland walk or collecting goodies from the garden is a great way to accessorise your home for autumn for free.

If you gather together these four elements, you can’t help but create an autumnal interior and a home with a cosy vibe.
