Are you in need of extra storage space in your kitchen? Today’s upcycling DIY could be just what you need! I’ve turned a couple of old pallets into a ‘pallet pantry’ and I’ve shared the step-by-step project

Even after an extreme ‘KonMari-ing’ of my kitchen, I’ve still got a little too much stuff to fit in the cupboards, and not enough storage space to keep everything looking neat. So an extra storage cabinet was the obvious answer.

But with the kitchen in my 1950s home being decades old, there was no way that I would be able to find more fitted units to match. So my thoughts turned to DIYing something a little different and that’s when the pallet pantry project was dreamt up!

There’s a building site nearby and they’ve always got a stack of pallets that they want to give away – with a big “free pallets” sign on them. So, knowing that I had easy access to some pallets, I decided to put the wood to good use.

I decided to recycle the pallets to create a ‘pantry’ unit that contains shelving for tins, jars and sauces. I thought that incorporating a chalkboard and cork pinboard into the cupboard doors would also be a handy addition for lists and notes.

After regularly dropping jars of spices onto the worktop after rummaging through a cupboard to find the right seasoning, I thought it was essential to include a spice rack in the pallet pantry. That way, I can keep my spices close to hand so that they’re easily accessible during cooking.

So that’s how the design of the pallet pantry came together and all that was left was to get my talented husband to help me deconstruct the pallets and to put together my new kitchen unit.

I’ve shared the step-by-step guide to make the pallet pantry for yourself on the Safestore blog. There you’ll find a list of all the materials and tools you’ll need. Plus I’ve taken plenty of photos of the entire process to make it as easy as possible for you to recreate the pallet pantry for yourself.

You can make it any size you like to fit the space you have in your kitchen. And it doesn’t have to be the same sanded-and-sealed wood finish like mine – you can give it a wash of chalk-paint all over or spray paint it to match your existing kitchen decor.

I couldn’t resist adding colourful interiors inside the shelves for a pop of colour in my kitchen!

What do you think of the pallet pantry? Will you have a go at making something similar for your own kitchen? Let me know in the comments below and I’d love to see your photos if you build one yourself!

  1. Thanks so much Beverly, I’m glad you like it! Absolutely – I’ve suggested chalk paint or spray paint, but staining it to match a rustic kitchen would look great too! 😀
