With power tools, gardening items, DIY materials and cleaning supplies, my shed workbench was over-flowing so I decided it was about time to sort out some proper storage. If you’ve been struggling to stow everything safely in your shed, this could be the solution for you too…

One of the things we’ve always been short on is storage space in the garden for all our DIY and gardening essentials. You might have spotted my blog post about revamping a 25-year-old shed not long ago, but already that shed is full-to-the-brim with bikes, boxes and goodness knows what.

I’ve therefore got a new 6×4 shed arriving this week. It was supposed to be delivered last week but a mix-up meant that it didn’t arrive as expected. Not to worry, the company quickly telephoned me to rearrange a delivery on a date that suited me, so I’m looking forward to Thursday this week.

In the meantime, I’d already organised for some fantastic storage racking to be delivered from VonHaus.com. This DID arrive on time – in fact, it was with me within a few days, and much sooner than I’d imagined. Even if the shed had arrived on time, this delivery was already waiting in my hallway, ready to be put up.

I didn’t want to walk around the boxes for another couple of weeks while I waited for the shed, so I decided to go ahead and put together the racking anyway. The boxes were rather heavy, to say the least (I don’t know how the delivery guy managed to get them up our path!) so I wanted to shift them into place as soon as possible.

The boxes contained everything I needed to construct a fantastic corner racking system – including the mallet, which arrived in a separate parcel. It’s the kind of metal storage shelving that you’d have in a garage or workshop, but I’m going to use it in my shed to make sure that it stays tidy and doesn’t become a tangled mess of tools in the future.

The system is very easy to construct, with no screws or bolts required. It simply slots together, and the metal frame is surprisingly lightweight. It’s the wooden shelves that give it stability (and probably account for most of the weight in those parcels!)

You can configure the shelving in any way you like; with shorter sections if needed, freestanding, or attached together. I chose a 1.8m 5 tier racking unit to start with and, because I wanted to get as much storage space as possible out of the corner of the shed, I opted for a corner section that spans the area.

The best thing about this racking system is that you can buy extra sections to add to your storage configuration whenever needed. You can save money by buying the sections in ‘bundles’ – I got the 2 piece corner bundle racking, which cost £14.99 less than buying the sections individually. Depending on how well it fits into the shed, I’m probably going to add another straight shelving section to completely cover the back wall of the shed.

I’ve stowed most of my tools and DIY bits ‘n’ pieces on the racking and I’ve still got plenty of shelving space left for gardening items and anything else I need to stow away. This makes full use of the height and depth of the shed and I can’t wait to tuck it into the space when the shed arrives later this week. I’ll let you know how I get on!

What do you think of this storage system? Could you use something like this in your own garden, workshop or garage? And how do you keep your shed organised? Let me know your tips and ideas in the comments below.
