Cast your mind back to my previous home – can you remember the beach hut-style bathroom I created from shuttering that I found in a skip? I loved giving the tatty old bathroom a coastal makeover with off-cuts of old wood – especially seeing as I wasn’t spending any money on materials AND I was recycling.
So when I needed to build some storage for my new bathroom I of course turned to pallet wood. There was a building site nearby that had put out a sign ‘free pallets’ so I grabbed a couple on my way home and set to work.
For these two bathroom projects I only needed shorter lengths of wood so it was even easier than usual to make use of the pallet wood; for once, I didn’t need to use crowbar to wrench off the planks – I could just cut them off along the supports – SO easy.
I already had an old plastic laundry hamper but I wanted to dress it up so that it would look good in my bathroom. Sometimes it’s hard to find accessories to match the decor look you’re going for (or, at least, it’s hard to find good value accessories!) so I knew I needed to make a hamper myself.
That said, I still wanted to make use of my existing laundry bin, as there was no point throwing it away when it still worked fine and, in fact, it would make it loads easier to carry my washing down to the machine if I could remove an inner basket from the wooden laundry hamper.
I also liked the idea of creating a stool/table on the top of the laundry bin to put my cup of tea when I’m in the bath! So I built a frame that would fit around my existing laundry bin and then clad it pallet wood that I had sanded down to smooth out the edges and get that ‘driftwood’ effect.

What do you think of my ‘new’ upcycled bathroom accessories? I’m actually thinking about making some more of these hampers to use as storage stools in the garden! If I add some insulating material inside the hamper, I’m pretty sure they’d make good drinks coolers for summer garden parties too!
