Easy roof maintenance tasks you can do yourself (& when NOT to do it!)

The roof of a house is a perilous place so I wouldn't even begin to suggest you take on a roofing DIY task yourself as it takes time, skill and specialist safety equipment to perform necessary repairs. That said, there's no reason why you can't assess the current state of the roof and spot any minor fixes that can solves problems before they become bigger jobs. At the very least, if you're capable of assessing the damage you can call in a roofer and explain what needs fixing. Here are some roofing tips to help you get started...

REGULAR CHECKS

Often, homeowners end up experiencing problems with the roof simply because they haven’t kept an eye on it. Sure, you might notice a leak when it starts pouring directly on your head, but there’s no need to wait that long before spotting a potential repair. Otherwise, you’ll be needing a roof replacement rather than a quick fix! Instead, you should be proactive and try to spot leaks before they become a problem.

All you have to do to check for leaks is wet the roof with a hose and head into the attic to check for any leaks. Also, it’s important to check on your roof after storms – we had concrete from the ridge blow out during a storm and we were able to have it fixed by a roofer before it became a bigger job. We probably saved a few hundred pounds on the repair bill simply because we noticed it straight away and there wasn’t too much damage at that point.

If you have extensive repairs that need to be addressed after a storm or once you’ve spotted a leak, you MUST call a roofer and DON’T try to tackle the job yourself. The roofing company will give you assessment of damage including the cost of materials, as well as the overall cost of the service. This will help you understand what’s wrong with your roof, what kind of materials you’ll need and how it can be repaired. Keep in mind that some roofing companies provide a free assessment so you won’t have to pay any money in advance and at least you’ll know what’s wrong.

DON’T DIY IT

Please DON’T EVER climb up onto your roof to take a closer look at problems! If you need to get a better look, use a camera. If you photograph the roof, you can zoom in to take a look at the condition of tiles and the ridge. Keep in mind that its really easy to damage the shingles, tiles or gutters so if you climb up, you’re just going to make things worse. Plus, just one slip up and you WILL fall and hurt yourself! DON’T RISK IT!

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Roof maintenance often comes down to experience. Homeowners have to be able to recognise small dents and cracks in their roof, and address them as soon as possible. If you know what to look for, it will be much easier to establish the extent of damage. For example, fungi is an indication that water isn’t draining off the roof properly. And make sure to look out for things around the property that might cause a problem for your roof in the future, such as dead branches on trees etc.

I hope these tips help you to keep an eye on your roof and recognise when you need to call in the experts to solve a problem or install a new roof. Please DON’T EVER try to get up there yourself – safety first!

  1. Thank you for your article.Really looking forward to read more. Fantastic.

  2. There are several roof maintenance tasks that you can take care of on your own—unless you run into a serious problem. Be sure that the weather is suitable and that your roof is safe to walk on before attempting any of the tasks.

  3. Never attempt to do roof work yourself, unless you have the specialised equipment and know how to use it. Several years ago, someone we knew fell from his roof and subsequently died from his injuries, after going up on the roof to try to fix the TV arial.
