Is your garden looking a little tired or uninviting? With summer almost upon us (at last) now is the time to ready your outdoor space for the months of summer fun ahead! If you look at the state of your garden and your heart starts to sink, then don’t worry; there are plenty of ways you get your outdoor space ready for all the activities, drinks with friends, family BBQs and outdoor fun that’s to come. Here I’ve gathered 5 super simple hacks that will help get you started. Enjoy!

ADD A LITTLE PRIVACY

Whether you’ve got the kids in the paddling pool, you’re wanting to do a bit of sunbathing, or if you just want a bit of privacy when you’ve got guests, then consider adding a few screening elements to your outdoor space. Privacy landscaping trees are a great place to start and they’re an instant solution. You could install a faux hedge, build a trellis and grow climbers or even hang drapes and long pieces of material around your seating area. This will give any garden a coastal, breezy kind of vibe. You could even have a go at tie dyeing them yourself! And speaking of seating areas…

AN AREA FOR RELAXATION

It’s time to dig out last year’s garden furniture and take a look at it. It might only need a good clean up, but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous (or you’d rather not blow your budget on a new patio set), consider upcycling your existing patio furniture. Revamping wooden furniture with a coat of vibrant garden paint is the perfect way to add a splash of colour to your garden. If you prefer the traditional heritage look, a pale duck-egg blue or mossy green is a classy choice. Add some new seat covers, bean bags and even a rug from inside the house and there’ll be plenty of room for everyone.

CREATE SOME SHADE

Although we love it when the sun shines, it’s recommended that we do get some relief from it throughout the day. Especially if you have little ones running around or are as fair-skinned as I am! Consider planting some trees or large shrubs that can provide a shaded area. If you don’t have space to grow larger plants, simply pop up a parasol or two or even pitch up a tent in the garden for the little ones to play in.

PAINT YOUR FENCE

Our garden goes through a lot during the colder months of the year and a rickety, broken and battered garden fence can really let down the overall look of your outdoor space. So this weekend, why not spend an afternoon cleaning, painting and treating your garden fence? You’ll be stunned at the difference it makes.

ADD SOME LIGHTING

You don’t want your family BBQ or friend gathering to end just because the sun has gone down. The evenings are much lighter in the summertime but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider your lighting options for your garden. Hanging up some fairy lights around your garden shed or seating area will certainly give an air of summer magic to your outdoor space. Or go for something more traditional like solar powered garden stakes or outdoor wall sconces to light paths – safety first!
