If you’re heading off to a festival this summer, you’re probably planning your outfits already. You’ve got to look great all weekend long, while fitting all your outfits and accessories into one backpack – so what are the essential fashion items you’ll need to see you through the festival? Here are three thrifty festival outfits that’ll ensure you stay looking fresh, whatever the weather…

The festival season is upon us and it’s time to decide on your festival outfits. If you plan ahead, you can easily dress for all eventualities without taking your entire wardrobe with you. I love going to Latitude festival each summer and I’ve become quite a pro at packing only the essentials for each day! So today I’ve teamed up with British country clothing specialists Rydale to bring you three outfits for the three days of the festival.

OUTFIT ONE

Ever since the days of Kate Moss at Glastonbury, green wellies and a wax jacket have been festival fashion staples. So it’s no wonder that I’m starting with these two items. Pairing wellies with denim shorts or a cute dress says ‘I’m going to carry on partying, even if I’m up to my knees in mud’ – and actually, they’ll allow you to do just that!

When first slipped my Rydale wellies onto my feet, I actually said ‘yaaaas’ out loud! They are so flexible and comfortable, so they’d be easy to kick off at the entrance of your tent. And they’re loose around the calf, which gives the impression of a slimmer leg – bonus! There’s a rainbow of colours available, in gloss or matt finishes. But classic olive green ‘farmer’ wellies are the ultimate festival accessory.

If you’re wearing wellies at a festival, it’s probably because it’s been raining. So wax jacket is an essential for those drizzly days. Go for an oversized, borrowed-from-the-boyfriend jacket so that your delicate polka-dot dress or denim shorts look super-cute and dainty in comparison. This coat is only £14.99 in the summer sale, which sounds like an absolute bargain for a wax jacket, if you ask me!

OUTFIT TWO

The sun is shining and there’s no better place to be than at a festival when the weather is good. Pull on your cutest lightweight floral wrap dress (this daisy print dress is only £9.99 in the sale) to stay cool and breezy in the hot weather. Add a hat to keep the sun off your head, cover your whole body in sunscreen and you’re ready for a full day of festival fun.

I think that cute dresses look best when paired with some fierce chunky boots so I’ve included a pair of black leather boots to give this outfit a rock-chick look. These ankle boots have grippy rubber soles, which might come in handy if it gets slippery underfoot, and the smallest heel so that you don’t end up with aching toes from wearing high heels all day.

Even the sunniest days at a festival can be ruined by a downpour – but not if you have a shower-proof jacket at the ready. All you need is a Jacket-in-a-Packet like this one. You don’t have to wear it all day as it folds into it’s own bag and can be popped into your satchel or backpack while the weather is nice. If there’s a sudden storm, you don’t need to run for shelter: simply zip on your jacket, pull up the hood and carry on dancing.

OUTFIT THREE

Whether you’re partying in the woods, watching your favourite band or sitting in the comedy tent all day, there’s nothing more comfortable to wear than a t-shirt dress. It stretches and moves with you, it looks really laid-back and relaxed, and you can dress it up or down. A t-shirt dress is such a ’90s style, which is a hot trend for this summer.

You’re going to be on your feet for most of the day at a festival and a study has shown that the average festival goer will walk about 15 miles during a festival. So you’re going to need some comfortable shoes to do it in. That’s where canvas pumps come in. They’re less sporty than trainers but more comfy and practical than shoes and, if you choose these polka dot canvas shoes, they’re super-cute too. They go with dresses, shorts and jeans so they’re probably the only shoes you’ll need all summer long, let alone at the festival.

Finally, when the sun sets over the festival field, the temperature can drop with it. At that point, all you need to do is add a padded body-warmer to keep you cosy for the rest of the evening. This keeps your arms free for dancing, clapping and whooping but locks in the warmth. Plus, the padded gilet has zipped pockets where you can stow your phone and money while you jump around to your favourite band.

And one final festival essential you’ll need this summer is: a picnic rug! If you’ve got a blanket that folds away into a small bag-sized package, with a handle for carrying with you, you’ll be ready to stop for lunch, chill out while watching a band or snuggle up when the temperature drops in the evening. This one has a waterproof backing so dewy grass or muddy fields won’t dampen your carefully chosen festival outfit! My picnic blanket is a classic blue tartan that matches the colours of my caravan perfectly for the ultimate glamping combo!

What do you think of these three outfits? Will you be embracing ‘farmer fashion’ or going for a 90s vibe with a t-shirt dress a pumps at your next festival? Let me know what other fashion essentials you will be packing in your backpack this summer in the comments below. I’d love to hear your ideas 🙂
