If you’re looking for an affordable kitchen update, you don’t need to completely rip everything out and start again. Today I’m sharing some easy ways that you can refresh your kitchen and follow the 2019 kitchen trends for less. And, if your worktops are damaged, worn, or simply outdated, all the brand-new cabinets in the world won’t give you the kitchen you are looking for. Here’s how to bring your kitchen up-to-date for less:
COLOURFUL CABINETS
In 2018 most popular style for kitchen was Shaker cabinets. The strong and sturdy cabinets have been a best-seller since they were designed in the 1800s! They fit into any existing kitchen decor easily and, while they are still a popular choice, they’re becoming much more colourful for 2019. So if you already have shaker doors installed, maybe now’s the time to give them a coat of paint?
Sure, white makes a kitchen look bigger, brighter, and cleaner so it’s no surprise that minimalist white was a big trend in 2018. But what started as a cabinet finish suggestion became an entire room design, with white cabinets (upper and lower in most cases), white walls, white splashbacks and white appliances. Rather stark, don’t you think?
2019 is be the year that brings colour back to the most used room in the home. Yes, we can still add white to keep that fresh, clean feel, but not only white. The trend is going back to warm colours for the kitchen and cabinets will be finished in natural wood, or painted in light (but not white) shades. You can include a contrasting colour for the base units – combining a darker hue below the worktop and a lighter colour for the walls cabinet – which makes the room feel bigger and more airy.
SUPER STORAGE
Another 2019 update is to make your storage work harder. Cabinets need to be more space efficient so you can add all kinds of solutions inside your cupboards. Lazy susans, pull out vertical storage, extra shelves and small racks on the doors to store spices or utensils make the space easier to organise. Even kitchen drawers will have removable dividers to aid organisation. I blame Marie Kondo and her Spark Joy book haha!
TEXTURED MONOCHROME
While 2019 kitchen trends are moving away from white, that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of your existing white kitchen. This year black and white is a hot combination. White cabinets will look great with black worktops, tiles and accessories so it could simply be a case of making some low-cost changes to bring your kitchen on trend.
If you’re choosing a new countertop, opt for something with a little texture or sparkle to stop the monochrome from looking too stark. We’ve seen a rise in concrete worktops, floors, and splash backs and it’s become something of a timeless look – and is almost indestructible!
COUNTRY KITCHEN
Shaker units lend themselves to the ‘country kitchen’ trend so this is an easy way to update your kitchen for 2019 if you already have shaker cabinets. Add small glass doors to a couple of wall-mounted cabinets an open look or add more storage using freestanding cabinets with open shelves for a farmhouse feel. Lots of wooden accessories will help to bring the whole ‘modern rustic’ together.
