Whether you’ve got a grey, beige, white (or even black) sofa those neutral hues can look a little bland, but they’re also a fantastic base upon which to create a variety of interior design themes. Here’s how you can style up one neutral sofa in six different ways to change the look of your interior for less…

It’s not often that you’ll hear me raving about neutral sofas as I’ve recently been on the hunt for a blue, yellow or orange sofa for my own mid-century home. But, in terms of saving money year-on-year, neutral sofas are where it’s at.

If you want to follow the latest interior design trends and update your decor regularly you can’t beat a grey or cream sofa. The neutral base colour allows you to apply any trend to your room by switch out the cushions, throws and accessories. Today, I’m going to show you exactly how ONE neutral sofa can be styled in a variety of ways using a few cheap cushions

1. MONOCHROME TONES

If you’ve followed my bedroom renovations, you’ll know that I love monochrome tones in my home. It feels fresh and contemporary, and black is one of the top interior design trends for 2019. So, for a minimalist interior, stick to monochrome tones such as white, grey and black. You can add interest with simple patterns or soften the stark look with velvet and faux fur textures.

2. 70s MUSTARD

Another colour that came out top in the analysis of 2019 interior design trends is 1970s style mustard. So if you want to change up your monochrome interior to include a splash of mustard yellow, it couldn’t be easier.

Keep those grey cushions from your monochrome scheme (after all, yellow and grey has been a winning combo for a few years now) and all you need to do is add some patterned throw pillows with yellow tones. You can even make your floor cosy with large floor cushions for a very laid-back 70s vibe.

3. MID-CENTURY PATTERN

If mustard yellow isn’t for you, don’t worry – you can still get that mid-century style by adding colourful patterned cushions to your neutral sofa. A repetitive pattern in any combination of olive green, brown, mustard, bright blue, orange or red creates a contemporary take on mid-century prints.

It’s amazing how different these two rooms look – it really does go to show that the feel of your whole interior design scheme depends on which colours you choose. Be sure to go for your favourites to personalise your space and turn that neutral sofa into a chill-out space you love.

4. SOFT PASTELS

Perhaps a much softer scheme is more your style? In which case, ditch the bright colours and opt for patterns in more subtle, coordinating hues. You can bring in soft textures like velvet and re-use that faux fur cushion from the monochrome scheme above.

Pink cushions help to bring out the warm tones in the fabric of the neutral sofa, creating a much softer look overall. As you can see from the photo above, you only really need a couple of extra cushions to get this soft, pared-back look, or you can pile on half a dozen throw pillows for an extremely cosy spot that tempts you to snuggle up with a book.

5. DESERT VIBES

I love those ikat and aztec style patterns on the sofa above, and it got me thinking about how I can use similar patterns in warm colours to create a desert vibe. I think the terracotta tones and the addition of the snake plant turns the monochrome living room into a boho, desert-esque space. By the way, this faux fur cushion is proving to be very versatile for almost any interior design theme!

6. BOLD FLORALS

If you’re someone who loves a splash of colour, a neutral sofa allows you to really go for it. Your vibrant cushions will take centre stage so choose one or two strong floral patterns, and then pick out just one of the bright colours – in this case the purple tone – with cushions in a solid colour. Add flowering pot plants in the same hue to surround yourself with your favourite colour.

It’s amazing how different the exact same living room can look with just a soft furnishings and accessories, eh?! That simple neutral sofa makes a great base for a whole range of interior design trends so you can easily switch-up your style for the cost of just a few cushions. Let me know which look is your favourite, and I’d love to know how you use accessories to style up your home so please share your tips in the comments below 🙂
