Not just a music festival: Art & creative workshops at Latitude

A painting in the woods. An installation in the field. A performance in the marquee. A class in the clearing. You'd be surprised at just how many creative happenings occur at Latitude festival. Graffiti in the woods. Performance art in the marquee. Installations by metalwork artists in the field. A drawing class in the clearing. You’d be surprised at just how many creative happenings occur at Latitude festival.

Sure, with literature, poetry, theatre, film and dance, Latitude isn’t just a music festival but did you realise quite how arty it is?? Here are just a few of the creative goings-on that I stumbled upon at this year’s Latitude festival

LIVE PAINTING

Over the course of the weekend three giant blank canvases were painted live by the artist Adam Cutts. I spotted the canvases being installed in the woods on Thursday night along with some neon signs.

Each day I passed the canvases on the way into and out of the arena and I took some snaps to record the progress of the paintings. It was impressive to watch the artist at work and, by the end of the weekend, the finished artworks were complete, featuring HMT Empire Windrush passengers who arrived in the UK in 1948.

THE WOODLAND

The are plenty more paintings amongst the trees and ferns in the woodland. Giant portrait canvases by street artist Dale Grimshaw line the route from the campsite to the arena.

Even the entrances to the stages are artworks in themselves, with hand-painted designs on the walls of Pamper Street and the Lavish Lounge, and a sparkling sign at Solas.

And while you’re looking up at the stage signs, don’t forget to look up at the installation art hanging from the trees, including neon pieces that illuminate the woods at night.

CREATIVE CLASSES

Throughout the festival you’ll find plenty of creative goings-on to get involved with. On the first night I spotted a drawing class hosted by The London Drawing Group in the clearing in the Faraway Forest.

I also spotted a pottery workshop in the festival line-up and there were craft activities going on all day in the kids area, so there was plenty of creative classes to get involved with, whatever your age.

And for those of us who were just passing through from one performance to the next, there were opportunities to see sculptures and installations wherever you went – and a chance to make your mark by doing a quick doodle on a chalkboard caravan.
