It’s the height of summer and naturally you’ll want to go outside to enjoy the glorious weather in your garden. I’ve been landscaping my own garden all year with the aim of sitting out on the desk during these long summer evenings – lovely! However, evenings outside can easily result in an arm covered in mosquito bites – ouch. The bugs in my garden have already stopped me from enjoying the space on a couple of occasions so in today’s blog post I’m sharing what attracts mosquitoes to your garden and some inexpensive steps can you take to eradicate this pest problem…

WHAT ATTRACTS MOSQUITOES TO YOUR GARDEN?

Mosquitoes are notoriously known for breeding in still, stagnant water. Therefore, they’re attracted to every garden that contains a decent amount of moisture. Some of this water could be in your pond (if so, move your deckchairs away from that area!) but even small puddles or a little stagnant water are enough of a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes also enjoy living in debris in your garden such as lawn clippings, compost piles, stacks of twigs or sticks, and overgrown vegetation. Cleaning your garden on a regular basis is a simple method to prevent hordes of mosquitoes.

WHAT PROBLEMS DO MOSQUITOES CAUSE IN YOUR GARDEN?

A mosquito problem turns those joyful summer evenings in your garden into a miserable experience. Not only will you not be able to sit on your patio or deck without being bitten several times, but guests and visitors may not even want to visit due to the infestation of bugs. Not to mention the fact that mosquitoes are known to carry diseases and their bites can cause severe itching for days – and possibly scarring of your skin if you scratch too much.

But don’t worry – there are numerous methods for controlling mosquitoes in your home or garden, from DIY to professional solutions, so here are a few tips to get you started:

DO IT YOURSELF SOLUTIONS

  • Plant Repellents: Certain plants secrete or contain natural compounds that are known for repelling insects such as mosquitoes. These plants include Citronella, Catnip, Rosemary, and Marigolds. Plant these around your garden to deter mosquitoes
  • Repellent Candles: You can buy low-cost candles containing essence of Citronella. Because this plant repels mosquitoes, these candles are great for short-term relief.
  • Bug Foggers: These foggers can kill mosquitoes on contact, however should be used with caution as they are full of nasty chemicals.
  • Eliminate Stagnant Water: Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and therefore, it is important to eliminate any standing body of water in your garden. Common examples of stagnant water may include clogged-up gutters, tarps holding puddles of rain water, outdoor toys, pots, buckets or bird baths. By cleaning up your garden, you’ll also remove potential puddle sites that mosquitoes love.

PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS

Although DIY techniques may work for some, they are not as effective as professional approaches. Two of the cheapest professional service options include one-time service or seasonal service. One-time service includes only one fee and is capable of preventing mosquitoes from as long as a few weeks to months. The seasonal service is conducted every few weeks during the summer to fall to prevent the pest problem from recurring. While none of these solutions may eradicate your pest problem completely, they are useful for having events in your garden such as birthday parties or BBQs, and guests won’t have to worry about leaving with itchy mosquito bites on their arms!

The outdoors is a wonderful place to be during the summer and mosquito-proofing your garden is the first step in enjoying your outdoor space. By following these tips, you will not only save money, but hopefully also have a mosquito-free garden. Let me know your tips for getting rid of bugs in your garden in the comments below 🙂
