15 Sides hustles to do when your side hustle becomes your job

So you've already got a successful side hustle. SO successful in fact, that it's now your main hustle. You've given up your 9-to-5 job and are working on your business full time. Congratulations! But having an extra income stream on the side is always a good idea, so you might want to consider starting some of these on-the-side-of-your-side-hustle-slash-main-hustle projects as a back-up plan and bonus income...

So you’ve already got a successful side hustle. SO successful in fact, that it’s now your main hustle. You’ve given up your 9-to-5 job and are working on your business full time. Congratulations! But having an extra income stream on the side is always a good idea, so you might want to consider starting some of these on-the-side-of-your-side-hustle-slash-main-hustle projects as a back-up plan and bonus income…

I’ve recently been discussing the idea of side hustles with my bestie (who WILL make her family photography side hustle into her main business soon!) and I realised that ever since my side hustle blog became my main hustle, I haven’t replaced it with a back-up hustle on the side. And really, it’s a sensible idea to have multiple income streams, especially if you’re running your own business.

Having the opportunity to switch over to a side-hustle and earn a little extra when money gets tight takes away the stress of running your own business and wondering where the money is going to come from next. The more income streams you have, the better, right?

So, I’ve been thinking about other things you can do when your side-hustle becomes your main hustle – mostly because I want to start something new on the side too! What do you think of these 15 ideas..?

SELL SOMETHING

If you’re on the decluttering / Konmari bandwagon like me, you’ll probably have boxes and bags of things that you want to get rid of. So why not go through all the items you’re clearing out and try to make some cash from them? You could do any of the following to earn a little extra from your unwanted items:

  • Sell the things you clear out of your attic at a car boot sale.
  • If you have vintage or antique items, have a stall at a retro market or collectors fair to get a better price for old originals.
  • Take LPs to local dealers to get a fair price on old vinyl records.
  • Put those new-with-tags dresses that you never wore onto Depop or eBay to get your money back.
  • Gumtree and Facebook local marketplace is the place to list used furniture, electricals or anything that’s too big to post, as you can sell it to a local person who will come to collect it.

TEACH SOMETHING

If you have a skill, don’t hide it from the world – teach it! There will be other people out there who want to learn how to do macrame, upcycle furniture, paint watercolours or speak French. If you know how to do something that others don’t, why not make a little extra money out of it on the side? You could:

  • Host workshops for multiple students to learn a practical skill in a day.
  • Make YouTube videos to share online tutorials and make money long-term once you are able to monetize your channel.
  • In a similar vein, you could post your video course on Udemy and make a passive income when students buy your course.
  • Teach one-on-one as a language tutor, music teacher or even as a social media trainer.
  • Sell an online course via your social accounts or blog to help others achieve the success you’ve have in your business.

MAKE SOMETHING

If you’re at all creative, I’m sure you can make some money from the things you make. It’s easy to begin selling your art, crafts, photos and design skills online so have a go and see if you can find people to buy your makes. Here are some ways to make it happen:

  • Post photos of your artwork on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and tell your followers that it’s available to buy and that you take commissions.
  • Open a Folksy or Etsy shop (or even sell on eBay) to showcase your crafty makes.
  • Go to a local craft market on a Saturday morning and sell your items in person.
  • 93% of active pinners said they use Pinterest to plan for purchases and 87% said they’ve purchased something because of Pinterest so that’s a great place to post photos of your makes and link through to your online shop or portfolio website.
  • Sell your photos through a stock photography website for a small commission on each download.

I hope these ideas have given you some food for thought when it comes to making a little extra cash on the side. I’m going to start working on my own side-hustle soon with the aim of making a passive income in the future so keep an eye on my YouTube channel for more new videos – fingers crossed haha!
