Think you know how to make a pompom? Today’s crafty blog post will take your skills up a notch with this step-by-step guide to make cute, fluffy, blushing, heart-eyed emojis. My husband got me a set of pompom makers for Christmas a few years back. You know what I mean; those half-moon shapes that are supposed to make it even easier to create pompoms of all shapes and sizes. While I’ve had a play with them (and even used the pompom makers to decorate my cat’s basket!) that’s as far as my pompom crafting has gone. Until now, that is!
This adorable craft book (with fun neon lettering on the cover) is packed full of mini pompom projects to make, including designs for creating fruit, animals, sweet treats, birds, food and, of course, emojis. If you have a creative person in your life, I reckon this newly published book could be the ideal Christmas gift for them.
There are plenty of photographs throughout the book and the diagrams are easy to follow. And once you’ve made some of these fun pompom designs, there are tips to help you to turn your creations into key chains, pendants, earrings and fashion accessories. Has there ever been a craft more fun than pompom-making? I can’t imagine one!
HOW TO MAKE A HAPPY BLUSHING EMOJI POMPOM
Colours: 1. Citron, 2. Coffee Bean, 3. Fondant.
1. Use yellow yarn (Citron) to wrap 27 rounds on the left side of the arm, making three layers.
2. Use brown yarn (Coffee Bean) to wrap 3 rounds next to the yellow yarn to make the mouth. Next, use pink yarn (Fondant) to wrap 4 rounds at the centre – this will become the pink cheeks.
3. Use yellow yarn to wrap 4 rounds to the left of the pink layer. To make the eyes, use brown yarn to wrap 4 rounds to the left of the yellow layer you’ve just made. Now wrap the rest of the arm with 63 rounds of yellow yarn. For the other arm, you can either repeat the steps to create another face on the other side or wrap it entirely in yellow yarn, using 105 rounds.
4. After cutting and tying the pompom, remove it from the pompom maker and trim it into a round shape that is about 1in (2.5cm) in diameter.
5. Lastly, use tweezers to arrange the yarn to create a rosy-cheeked happy face.
HOW TO MAKE A HEART-EYES EMOJI POMPOM
Colours: 1. Citron 2. Coffee Bean 3. Matador.
1. Use yellow yarn (Citron) to wrap 19 rounds on the arm, making one layer. Then use red yarn (Matador) to wrap 11 rounds over a section of the yellow – this will make the heart eyes.
2. Use yellow yarn to wrap 9 rounds to the right of the red yarn.
3. To make the mouth, use brown yarn (Coffee Bean) to wrap 8 rounds next to the yellow layer you’ve just made. Wrap the rest of the arm with 58 rounds of yellow yarn. For the other arm, you can either repeat the steps to create another face on the other side or wrap it entirely in yellow yarn, using 105 rounds.
4. After cutting and tying the pompom, remove it from the pompom maker and trim it into a round shape that is around 1in (2.5cm) in diameter.
5. Lastly, use tweezers to arrange the yarn to create a neat smile and a pair of heart eyes.
