Mother’s Day gift inspiration from Etsy’s local makers & artists

With Mother's Day fast approaching and it being #MarchMeetTheMaker month on Instagram, I figured that there's no better time for me to put together a blog post featuring some of my favourite local makers and Etsy shops.

With Mother’s Day fast approaching and it being #MarchMeetTheMaker month on Instagram, I figured that there’s no better time for me to put together a blog post featuring some of my favourite local makers and Etsy shops.

Mother’s Day is on 22nd March 2020 so you’ve still got time to order a unique, handmade gift for your mum. You could either shop in person at local makers markets (such as Fram Makers Market on 21st or Bluebirds Handmade Market in Great Yarmouth on 15th) or you could browse the Editors Picks Page on Etsy for Mother’s Day gift inspiration. That way, you don’t even need to leave your house to find a special gift for mum – and to support a crafter in their handmade business.

If you know of any crafters and artists who are local to you, why not search the Etsy website to find their profiles and visit their shops to pick up a unique Mother’s Day gift. Here are a few of my favourite gift ideas and many of these makers are based in East Anglia…

LOVELY LYDIA’S WASHBAGS

Its a practical gift that every mother needs, but it’s also a bit of a treat to have a hand-printed, unique washbag, zipper purse or make-up bag that no-one else has. All of the designs in the Lovely Lydia Etsy shop are simply stunning and each pouch is handmade in Suffolk. It’ll probably come as no surprise that one I love the most is this biscuit print – in fact, I already own the zipper purse in this design!

CRAFTY CAT’S PET PORTRAITS

If your mum is an animal lover, why not get her the ultimate personalised artwork with a print of her pet? Crafty Cats Art can turn a photo of any beloved cat or dog into an original print, with a glinting gold foil finish. I reaaaaally want to have Cookie and Muffin’s portraits done like this – and I already have one of the Crafty Cats Art star sign gold foil prints in my office.

HANNAH BERRIDGE’S PAINTED CERAMICS

Having watched The Great Pottery Throwdown this year, I have a new appreciation for anyone who paints on ceramics – it looks SO difficult. Hannah Berridge is one of the best pottery painters I know (we’ve met many times at local markets) and her designs are so unique. To make the gift even more special for Mother’s Day, you could commission Hannah to personalise any of these ceramic gifts especially for your mum.

MITCHELL FINCH’S STITCHED BROOCHES

I am a bit biased about this choice because I actually bought one of Mitchell Finch’s stitched badges of a robin for my mum last year. But that does mean that I am qualified to recommend these quirky stitched brooches and framed pieces, as I’ve seen them ‘in real life’! The designs are intricately stitched and are totally unique – get in touch to commission your mum’s favourite flower, fruit or bird on a brooch.

UNRULY PRINT’S ORIGINAL LINO PRINTS

If your mum is cultivating a gallery wall at home – or cultivating house plants for that matter – she’ll love the addition of an original lino print by Suffolk artist Unruly Print. This gorgeous, hand-cut and hand-printed Monstera Deliciosa cheesepant print is just one of the many botanical and retro designs available to buy on Etsy from this professional printmaker. Plus, you can commission him to create new designs – your family home, boat, vintage car or even pet.

BLUEBELL LANE’S JEWELLERY

What do you reckon? Would you mum like an original piece of sterling silver jewellery? This local maker creates geometric designs as well as more rustic hammered finishes. Check out Bluebell Lane’s Etsy shop for many more designs.

ASPEN PRESS’ WORKSHOP

If your mum already has everything – why not get her an experience instead? You could treat her to a local workshop, such as the letterpress printing course with Aspen Press. And while you’re browsing their Etsy shop, you could pick up a gift card in which to present the course gift voucher to your mum.

REBECCA PYMAR’S FINE ART PRINTS

And one final idea is to get mum an artwork featuring one of her favourite locations. It could be a place that you visited as a family when you were younger, or somewhere that you intend to go with your mother in the future. Rebecca Pymar creates Art Deco style prints of many locations throughout the UK so have a browse of her Etsy shop to find a meaningful print for your mum.

What do you think of these eight gift ideas? Each has been created by artists and makers, and when you buy from their Etsy shop, you’re supporting a small business, which is always a lovely thing to do. Let me know if you choose one of these treats for your mum this Mother’s Day – or please share your favourite Etsy shops in the comments below as I’d love to discover more unique handmade products and UK-based makers 🙂
