While you might not be thinking about travelling anywhere at the moment, that doesn’t mean we should put our plans on hold indefinitely and never think about our future travels. In fact, it’s the perfect time to take stock of the way that we travel and how we can make it more sustainable – and frugal – in the future. Here are some tips to consider for your future adventures and to give you something lovely to look forward to..!

STAY IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY

We’re probably all aware of the carbon footprint of air travel and that it’s therefore not the most sustainable way to get around. In fact, I was reading an article about this very topic in Be Kind magazine yesterday. So, perhaps, you would plan to travel around your home country in the future. I bet there’s plenty of places you’ve never been to, and that you’ve favoured going abroad for your holidays rather than investigating your own country.

So, for more sustainable holidays in the future, why not explore your home country? You will certainly be saving money by doing this, as you’re not paying for flights and you won’t have to apply for a visa or to renew your passport. Plus, you’ll probably be able to get around by public transport, which brings me to the next sustainable travel tip…

THRIFTY TRAIN TRAVEL

If you’re planning to travel for your holiday, getting the train is one sure-fire way to ensure that your holiday starts straight away. You’re not waiting at the airport for hours and, as soon as you sit down in your reserved seat, you holiday starts. You can enjoy the landscape whizzing by while drinking a lovely cup of coffee. Most destinations around the country are covered by rail links but you needn’t be limited to staying in the UK.

As a more sustainable alternative to air travel, you can get the train from the UK to Europe via the channel tunnel, or for a lower-cost option, you could get a train to the coast and then a ferry across to France or Germany. If a cruise is your idea of a luxurious holiday trains to Southampton will take you to the biggest cruise liner port (where Titanic set sail – but don’t let that put you off haha!) and you can explore the world without ever travelling by air.

SAVE MONEY ON BAGGAGE

If you avoid air travel, you can also avoid paying those hidden costs like baggage allowance, in-flight meals and taxes. Instead, you can be sure that the cost of your train or ferry ticket has no hidden extras. If you think that travelling to Europe by train with your all family’s holiday suitcases would be difficult, you can always send your luggage ahead to the destination and enjoy the freedom of travelling with just a carry-on or backpack.

STAY FRUGAL ON HONEYMOON

Congratulations if you’re getting married soon! While you might end up delaying your honeymoon until after the outbreak, that doesn’t mean you can’t start dreaming about your ideal post-wedding getaway for next year. It may sound like an unusual strategy but one way to stay frugal is to go to an all-inclusive resort for couples. Yes, you might pay more for your honeymoon, but you then won’t have to worry about the cost of your meals and whether or not to have that cocktail.

Often, when you add up how much you might spend on romantic dinners, glasses of wine and hidden extras, you can end up spending way more money on a self-catering or half-board holiday than you would if you chose the all-inclusive option. Moreover, if you’re planning a destination wedding then Cabo wedding packages at all-inclusive resorts are an affordable option for weddings in Mexico. It’s SO much more relaxing knowing that everything is paid for up-front. And if you start planning now, you can save up for your wedding and honeymoon by putting money aside every month rather than paying on a credit card etc.

I hope these ideas have inspired you to plan a more sustainable trip the next time you go on holiday and that you can save money on the cost of your travel too! Let me know your own holiday hacks for frugal trips and sustainable travel in the comments below – I’d love to hear from you 🙂
