If you’re looking for inspiration for a happy, vibrant, mid-century interior, you’ve come to the right place! Today I’m sharing photos of one of my favourite homes ever and hopefully it’ll give you some ideas for injecting your own interior with colour and collections…

I had the pleasure of writing about Melanie Mahrhold’s colourful home for Reclaim magazine last year – the feature appeared in Issue 42, which is still available to buy via the back issue archive or as a digital download if you fancy having a read.

Melanie has kindly allowed me to share some photos of her stunning home on my blog so that we can all be inspired by her vibrant, sunny interior. I’d go so far as to say that this is my dream home; full of retro teak furniture, colourful art and plenty of plants.

When I first spotted this apartment on Instagram @___duundich__, I instantly stopped scrolled and checked out her grid. I was thoroughly entranced as I looked through photo after photo of her delightful boho rooms. I knew I wanted to learn more about Melanie and her design inspirations to I couldn’t wait to interview her.

Melanie is a multi-talented entrepreneur who works as an interior designer, a life coach, an artist and is a certified mediator. So it comes as no surprise that her home is beautifully designed and full of creativity. Check out her website Duundich Interior Design.

Each wall in her Berlin apartment is a gallery of artwork, trinkets and collections. I especially love how Melanie has displayed a variety of basketry against the rich blue wall – it really makes the woven designs stand out.

Another thing that I really admire about Melanie’s home is the plants; not least because I’m so impressed that she is able to keep so many tropical blooms alive! Practically everywhere you look there is a house-plant flourishing.

From the giant leaves of the cheeseplants in the dining space to the potted snake plant and tall cacti in the living room, each plant brings life and colour into the space, and varigated varieties even inject a splash of natural pattern.

By the way, I’m so jealous of her gorgeous daybed above. As you might already know, I’m a big fan of mid-century design and I can’t get enough of teak furniture. I love how Melanie’s sideboard looks against the dark wall below – the contrast of the cool blue and warm wood works perfectly to really highlight the piece.

One of my favourite spaces is the bedroom. I mean, why not paint the walls in two vibrant colours?? And these two hues are just perfect! The bed looks inviting in front of the window and those patterned cushions tie all the colours together and make it look so cosy. I think I’d be happy to spend most of my days right there…

Melanie finds most of her furniture secondhand and spruces up old items with a lick of paint – definitely a girl after my own heart! Upcycling is such a great way to get to the look you want for less – plus you can customise your furniture to look exactly the way you want it to.

I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at these photos as much as I do and have been inspired to add more colour, collections and mid-century style to your own interior. Please leave me a comment below to let me know your what’s your favourite thing about Melanie’s Berlin home. 🙂

  1. I am dying to know where the midcentury daybed came from. I’ve never seen another like it and have fallen in love. Thank you!
