Like many special events, such as birthdays, anniversaries and hen parties, baby showers are another occasion where we have to think outside the box if we want to celebrate. Even though we might not be able to meet up in person, there’s nothing to stop you hosting a virtual party so here are a few ideas to plan your at-home baby shower…

1 PERFECT TIMING

The great thing about holding your baby shower online is that people can join in from all around the country – and all around the world, for that matter! So if you’ve got family in the US or a friend living in Europe, they can all still be invited to your special occasion. All you need to do is figure out the time zones and work out when is the best time for you all to gather together.

2 VIRTUAL PLATFORM

Next, you’ll need to choose a method for video calling your friends and family on the big day. Most social media sites don’t allow for larger group video calls so it’s useful to use a dedicated private video hosting site for events like this. WebBabyShower is a platform where you can host your party at a time that suits you and your guests – and you can even choose a theme to customise the look of your virtual event! Well, you’d put up decorations in your home, wouldn’t you? Why not decorate your video call screen?!

3 FUN AND GAMES

Now you need to pick some fun games to play. You can choose from a selection from the party provider as well as bringing your own ideas for games. I think that baby showers are often quite similar to hen parties so a box-set of games that can be played online, such as the Hen Hamper, is a handy kit, full of ice breakers and hilarious party games.

4 YOU’RE INVITED!

If you’re planning a virtual baby shower, the invitations can be virtual too! It’s so easy to send out personalised invitations to your email guest list, and you can design them to match the theme you choose for your baby shower video call platform. According to baby shower etiquette, invitations can be sent out up to four weeks in advance of the event, although the immediacy of email means that you can keep adding to the guest list as the day approaches if you’ve forgotten anyone! Plus, you’ll get replies pretty quickly too, which is great for planning purposes.

5 FOOD AND DRINK

Although you won’t be able to provide refreshments for your virtual guests, you CAN request that they have the same snacks ready in their own home so that you can all enjoy it together. Pizza is a good idea if you want to enjoy a meal “together”, or you can just ask people to bring their own crisps and sweet treats to the party. And make sure that everyone has a glass of something bubbly with them to toast the mum-to-be!

6 GREAT GIFTS

The good news is that it’s easy to create a gift registry list online if your guests are likely to want to give you a baby shower present. Having a list for from the choose from will ensure that you get a mix of goodies for the baby and not 10 moses baskets! Sometimes a gift registry company will send all of the gifts that your guests bought directly to you, which means you could do a live gift opening during the baby shower so your guests can see how grateful you are.

I hope these ideas will get you started on planning your virtual baby shower this year. Please let me know in the comments below if you’ve already hosted a virtual baby shower, birthday or hen party – I’d love to hear your ideas and how it all went!
