Autumn has almost become a 2nd Christmas in terms of decorating, with interior designers piling up pumpkins & draping leaf garlands over fireplaces. Here's some fall decor tips from top interiors bloggers to inspire you...

At this time of year, I love browsing Pinterest and seeing how designers and interiors bloggers dress their homes for autumn. It’s almost become a second Christmas in terms of decorating, with stylists piling up pumpkins and draping autumn leaf garlands over mantelpieces. I love the cosy look (any excuse to get out the fairy lights, right?) so I thought I would share some ideas from top interiors bloggers for inspiration…

PUMPKIN STYLING

Interior design blogger Amy from Cuter Tudor is the queen of styling a home for autumn. She uses both foliage and pumpkins to get a fresh fall look, and changes up her style every year. Her porch makeover for this autumn is a beautiful pastel-hued design and I can’t even tell whether her pumpkins, gourds and leaves are real or not – they just work perfectly.

Combining faux and real is a great tip when styling your home for autumn. Anything that might wither and die during the season, such as fresh foliage and mini pumpkins can be replaced with artificial versions to keep them looking great throughout October and November. Already-dried items like autumn leaves, conkers and seedheads can be used ‘as is’ to tie the silk foliage and faux gourds into the display so that you can’t really tell which is which.

HYDRANGEA ARRANGMENTS

Top stylist and product photographer Tamsyn Morgans regularly uses Hydrangeas in her home decor. Hydrangeas tend to flower in late summer and into autumn, so now is the perfect time to bring some of the heads indoors to include in your autumn display. I had a wonderful hydrangea bush in the front garden of my previous home but now we no longer have a hydrangea plant in the garden. I AM planning to grow one in the future but, in the meantime, there’s another option.

If you don’t have a hydrangea bush in your garden, you can buy silk hydrangea heads like the one below and bring them out to style your home for autumn every year. In fact, I think I’d like to enjoy hydrangeas in the spring too, so maybe artificial flower heads would be best for this kind of out-of-season styling. Who wouldn’t want pretty hydrangea flowers all year round?

AUTUMN LEAVES

Bringing autumn branches into your house is a super-thrifty option. You can string up leaves to create a garland or wire them onto a wreath. If you’ve got children, you can all enjoy going on a scavenger hunt around the garden to find fallen leaves, conkers and acrons to use in your autumn display. I love how interior designer Melanie Lissack styles her home for autumn – just take a look at her impressive fireplace display for Halloween.

The only problem with using leaves is that they can quickly curl up and crumble when they feel the warmth of central heating, so might not last as long as you would ideally like. Take Melanie’s advice and use a combination of real and artificial foliage, faux pumpkins, dried flowers and grasses to ensure that your display will continue to look great throughout the season. You can pop artificial branches in vases or use the leaves to create a staircase garland. For a great effect with even less effort, buy a ready-made wreath and pop it straight onto your front door.

I hope my lovely interior designer friends have given you some inspiration for decorating your home for autumn. I love their ideas and I can’t wait to start using dried foliage and silk leaves in my own home styling this season. What do you have planned for autumn? Will you be decorating your home for fall?
