DIY Video – How to make your own outdoor seat from scaffolding planks

Here's a quick DIY video that shows you how to upcycle scaffold boards and offcuts of pressure-treated timber to create your own outdoor bench seat for your garden. Using scaffolding is a low-cost source of timber and you can upcycle old planks too...

Is there anything you can’t make from scaffold boards? I’ve previously made my garden table, some outdoor seating and even a hallway console table using scaffolding planks. It’s a relatively low-cost way to buy timber and it’s possible to get secondhand scaffolding wood at bargain prices that you can upcycle. Sure, it’ll be mucky and probably have splashes of paint or plaster on it but, if you’re going to be sanding and painting the wood anyway, it’s a very reasonable way to get sturdy timber for your projects.

We’ve previously built a few garden benches and they’ve stood the test of time. In fact, they look as good today as they did when we made them a couple of years ago. So, when I wanted to add a bit more seating around my DIY garden table (also made from scaffold boards), we decided to make another bench but this time I filmed the process!

The great thing about this project is that you can adjust the measurements to create the size of garden bench that suits you best. We’ve gone for a width of two planks and have simply cut the scaffold boards in half, which dictated the length of the pressure-treated timber we needed to use for the frame beneath it. Scaffolding wood comes in a variety of lengths so you’ll need to measure your planks and decide the dimensions of the bench for yourself.

I previously posted a step-by-step guide to make this type of bench on my blog but sometimes it’s helpful to see the project come together in a video. Here’s my quick YouTube vid (5 and a half minutes) to show you how to build a garden bench from scaffold planks and pressure-treated timber:

Let me know if you have a go at making a bench seat yourself and please tag me in your pics if you share them on Instagram @Cassiefairy – I’d love to see the end result! As you can see from my photos I’ve also made a garden table from scaffold planks so check out the blog post if you’d like to try this bigger project too. Happy building!
