Smart tips for decorating your bedroom

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house and requires some careful planning and extra thought when it comes to redecorating. Your bedroom should be a highly personal sanctuary where you are able to relax, unwind and enjoy restful sleep. The décor of the bedroom should reflect this, so it’s worth bearing these traits in mind throughout the design and decorating process.

Keep Calm and Carry On

When it comes to paint and wallpaper colours, it’s best to keep things relaxing with calm colours. Dark, bold shades work much better in living rooms and dining rooms, as many decorating guides suggest that they don’t promote good sleeping patterns. If you’re desperate to include a bold colour in your bedroom, confine it to a feature wall or simply add accessories of the desired tone. Busy wallpaper patterns should also be treated with caution when it comes to decorating your bedroom, as they can make a small bedroom seem even less spacious. Stick with soft, natural shades like cream, tan, sand, pale pink and lilac.

Create a Focal Point

The bed is likely to be the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom, and this means that it often becomes the room’s focal point. A focal point is important because it establishes a hierarchy in the room and draws your eye immediately, so that on entering the room you don’t just seem a jumble of furniture and accessories. It’s a good idea to make the head of the bed the focal point, amplified by an arrangement of bold pillows or a tapestry or painting hung behind the headboard.

You may find that the bedroom window also competes for attention, so either move the bed closer to the window so that the two strong elements merge, or dress the window neutrally. If you have a low bedroom ceiling, try hanging your curtains from the top of the wall above the window, as this will lend the room a sense of height and space.

Choose High Quality Bedroom Furniture

Due to the importance of the bedroom, it’s essential that you invest in a few pieces of high quality furniture. Your bed and mattress are crucial to the quality of your sleep, so don’t hesitate to splash out on these items. A wooden bed is an investment item that will last and look attractive for years to come, and can be purchased from a variety of retailers including Furniture Plus. Make sure that your vanity table, chest of drawers and bedside cabinet all match in terms of colour. If you have several mismatched items of furniture, consider painting them the same shade for a more cohesive appearance.
