4 hair trends to try this autumn

Hairstyles come and go, but one thing is certain: Hair is always going to need cutting, trimming, colouring, and styling. Now that autumn is upon us, you’ll want to try something new instead of the same old, same old. But what to try? One way to figure it out is to check out the latest autumn hair trends. There are plenty of styles to choose from, so you won’t risk looking like everyone else. Even if you choose a similar style, you can adapt it to your own look and make it unique. Following are four autumn hair trends to try – let me know how you get on!low-ponytail-autumn-hair-style

The Low Ponytail

Do you pull your hair into a ponytail, then pull it up higher using the elastic? It’s a habit that’s hard to break, as it’s the easiest way to tighten the hair so that it doesn’t come loose. But if you’re wearing your hair up as a regular style, it’s time for a change. Instead of pulling up on your hair, pull down. Get it as close to the nape of the neck as possible, then use a clip or elastic to hold it in place. Putting your hair in this position is not as severe as pulling it higher, and it softens your face because the hair isn’t flat against your head. You can give your hair a smooth appearance by combing or brushing it back in parts, then running a comb through them to blend the hair. The best thing about a ponytail is that it doesn’t need constant maintenance and is an inexpensive hairstyle to keep up.sarah-nourse-braids-hair-plait-autumn-trend

#LFBlooms Beauty Box + Preparations for the UK Blog Awards

With only a couple of day to go until the UK Blog Awards I’m starting to get really excited. I did warn you that this week would be packed full of my preparations for the blog awards – I told you all about my shoes on Tuesday Shoesday and will be sharing my outfit tomorrow – so today I wanted to let you know about the lovely beauty box I received from Lookfantastic.com in order to prepare for the big night.look fantastic april 2016 beauty box_ look fantastic april beauty box make up-3It was an exciting moment when I opened up the mystery package and found out the theme of the April Beauty Box from Lookfantastic.com. The collection was #LFBlooms and is all about beauty with a difference. The natural, organic and eco products were gathered together to celebrate Earth Month – taking care of the planet while you take care of yourself. Thankfully, the box contained lots of cruelty-free brands and the collection promotes natural beauty – definitely my kind of thing! Plus, if you shop natural products on lookfantastic.com while the campaign is running, you’ll find some great discounts on good-for-you brands so check out the website today for inspiration. look fantastic april beauty box make up-2look fantastic april beauty boxFirst up is a hand scrub by Rituals, which is one of  my favourite products in the Beauty Box. As someone who suffers with very dry skin on my hands all year round (often flaking and cracking between my fingers) it’s lovely to find a product that treats this problem. There are many reasons to love Rituals; their products are not tested on animals, their product packaging is made from sustainable sources and they support the Tiny Miracles charitable foundation. The product itself is infused with nourishing oils so even while you’re scrubbing off the dry skin it is conditioning the skin too. It’s made a big difference to my hands already and after using the British Botanical Hand & Nail Butter also included in the #LFBlooms box, I am feeling ready for celebratory a manicure now!look fantastic april beauty box make up-4look fantastic april beauty box make up-10look fantastic april beauty box make up-11 Continue reading “#LFBlooms Beauty Box + Preparations for the UK Blog Awards” »

How to get glamorous curls

Today I have two fabulous things I want to share with you. Firstly, I’ve got a great step-by-step tutorial for creating glamorous curls at home. And secondly, I’m hosting a fun giveaway in conjunction with John Frieda so that you can win a Frizz Ease styling kit to recreate this smooth Hollywood-inspired look for yourself at home. Read on for top tips on styling from the John Frieda professional and to enter my competition.rita ora glamorous curls hair style diy tips

I love Rita Ora’s side-swept curls

Whether it’s a night out with the girls, a wedding or even date night, nothing says glamour more than voluminous, frizz-free curls. To help you achieve the look, here’s some tips on how you can turn up the volume and stand out from the crowd with some big, bouncy, beautiful curls.

Step 1 – To achieve perfect curls, it’s important to first prep your hair with the right products. To ensure hair is left looking smooth, wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically to combat frizz.

Step 2 – Next add a small amount of mousse to your damp hair in order to make your hair more manageable in the styling process. At this stage you may even want to add a root booster product to ensure maximum volume is achieved.

Step 3 – Blow dry your hair using a round barrelled brush. Make sure you lift your hair up at the roots before smoothing your hair down at the tips.root lift round brush glamorous curls tips

Get lift at the roots with a round brush

Step 4 – Now, how you choose to add curls to your look is up to you. When using a curling tong, ensure all curls are created facing the same direction. Alternatively you can use heated rollers to achieve your desired big curls.

Step 5 – To secure the look in place, spray hairspray onto your locks. You may even want to keep a mini can in your handbag so you can keep your hair on top form for longer!

Step 6 – Finally it’s time to accessorise but remember to keep things simple. You don’t want to take away too much from the volume you’ve just created by wearing an oversized accessory. Instead, choose a delicate hair brooch or decorated hair pin, perfect for keeping those flyaway hairs in place whilst remaining stylish. styling kit prize john frieda frizze ease competition on cassiefairy blogNow here’s the fun part – you can win a styling kit from John Frieda to get this look for yourself at home. How to create iconic 1950s hairstyles

Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Bridget Bardot, Marilyn Monroe – they all epitomised an era of elegance and glamour. Their looks remain timeless and, therefore, it’s no surprise that their influence on style still lives on today. Celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Dita Von Teese, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera all embrace the hairstyles of the 1950’s, and successfully wear them with a modern twist. Here’s our guide on how you too can follow in the footsteps of the icons of the ‘50’s and get the perfect vintage hairstyle.betty grable iconic 1950s hairstyle pompadour

Betty Grable

Pompadour – Even if you’ve not heard the name before, you’ve no doubt seen it, though you may recognise it as the iconic voluminous quiff-like style that many associate with the era. The pompadour was a style famously worn by male stars such as Elvis Presley but was also adopted by female stars such as actress Betty Grable.

Step 1 – Take a section of hair from the middle of your head at the front and divide it into 3 sections horizontally. Backcomb the back two sections of the hair and add some volumising product to add some much needed lift and volume. Don’t backcomb the front section though or you’ll risk losing a sleek finish.

Step 2 – Pull all three pieces of hair together and pinch the hair towards the bottom, then twist the hair one full turn. Push the whole ‘pomp’ forward to create extra height. Fix in place with hairpins.

Step 3 – As you’ve already backcombed your hair, your pompadour should be pretty tough so don’t be afraid to use a comb to smooth over your hair once it’s done before you use hairspray to keep the look in place.marilyn monroe iconic 1950s hairstyle

Marilyn Monroe Curls – Did you know, Marilyn Monroe wasn’t a natural blonde? She was actually a brunette and was advised to dye her hair to help further her career.

Step 1 – Work a handful of mousse into damp hair to help hold your hair in place once styled. Continue reading “How to create iconic 1950s hairstyles” »

Step-by-step Summer Beach Waves

Tousled waves are one of my favourite hairstyles for blonde hair beauties during the summer months, making it look like you have just stepped straight off the beach, even if all you’ve been doing is working in the office all day. One important tip I have for this hairstyle, as with any curly or wavy hairstyle, is to use an anti-frizz serum to smooth and tame flyaway hairs.lauren conrad john frieda beach hair waves diy guide

Lauren Conrad’s beachy waves

To get natural looking beach waves and bring out those summer vibes, follow the few simple steps below.

  1. First of all, separate your hair into three segments. If your hair is quite thick or you have lots of it, separate your hair into four or five segments as this will make it easier to manage.
  2. Start to curl your hair one segment at a time. I tend to start curling around five inches from the bottom of my hair. Using my straighteners, I place my hair in between the heated iron and curl my hand outwards as if I was twisting a door handle. Try to turn your hand as far as it will go and then release.
  3. Repeat this process on each segment until your full head of hair is complete.
  4. Gently run your fingers through your hair to separate the curls and make them look more natural.
  5. Finally apply a light mist of hairspray to hold it in position and ensure the waves don’t drop out.

Another method I use to achieve beach waves is to apply sea salt spray once I have washed and towel dried my hair. There are so many different types of salt sprays out there, so it’s worth trying a few until you find one that best suits your hair type. John Frieda have a great beach blonde range which is perfect for this style. There you go – perfect winter beach waves which took less than five minutes to achieve! New year, new hair

Each time that I’m planning a trip to the hairdressers I think that I’ll go for something different, but I always chicken out at the last minute. In fact, my hairdresser knows me so well that I don’t even need to tell her how I would like my hair; she knows I’ll be having a blunt fringe every time and knows just the right combination of highlights and brown dyes to use to give my hair a sunkissed blonde look rather than my natural ash shade.

So I’ve basically had the same hair colour and cut for years and have been wearing it straight down pretty much all the time. There was a brief period back in September that my hair straighteners broke and I had to go for the natural look (kind of fluffy) for a couple of weeks, but I just couldn’t find a way of taming it – I looked like I had bed-head all the time, and not in a good way. So I reverted back to my usual routine of blow-drying and straightening, and dealing with the fact that the only way to make my hair look neat was to make it as flat as possible.new year new hair remington stylerThis year, I am determined to get my hair under control and to try out some different styles for everyday wear. Actually, that is the key phrase; everyday wear. Continue reading “New year, new hair” »

Create a glamorous party look with silk rollers

I’m sure you’ve heard me say it many times before but I love the glamour of the 40s and 50s and even though my wardrobe of vintage dresses and cute swing dancing shoes is gradually growing, the one thing that I’ve not yet been able to achieve is the hair styles from this era. I’ve watched some fab videos on YouTube to learn how to do the victory rolls of the 40s and have tried time and again to get the polished Hollywood glamour look of the 50s but my style always seems to fall flat within a very short space of time.Remington Professional Silk Rollers_-6

I usually try out my vintage hairstyles when I’m heading out to a hangar dance or a nostalgia show and the limited amount of time I have to get ready, coupled with my general hair-styling incompetence, means that although I can sometimes leave the house with a passable hair do, by the time I’ve been flung around the dancefloor a couple of times my hair is flat again. Which is really unfair because my hair is naturally wavy! I have no idea how it manages to ends up so straight and lifeless – if I wanted it to be straight it would kink up immediately – but the minute I want to look glamorous and polished, my hair decides that it has other plans and wants to slob out instead.

So here’s the point of my blog post today – I’ve just finished trying out my new silk rollers for the first time and I wanted to share my experience with you, along with a couple of photos to give you an idea of what look can be achieved with my new Remington heated rollers (available from Very.co.uk or Amazon). I tried a tentative curl the night before and that seemed to stay fairly well without any hair spray so I decided to give it a go all over and see what happened.

As a complete roller novice, I wasn’t sure what to expect and wondered how I could be sure of the finished result if I couldn’t really see what I was doing. But nonetheless I plugged in the unit to start heating up and read through the comprehensive instructions that came with my Remington Professional Silk Rollers kit. I discovered that I needed to wind the sections of hair around the roller and roll up to the roots so that the roller was underneath my hair. The instructions promised that this would give me the Hollywood glamour look I’d been desperately trying to achieve! Other options included using rollers from front-to-back on the top section of your hair for volume rather than curls, and the hair could be rolled up the opposite way to give a flicked-out look. I never imagined that rollers could be so versatile!

I enlisted the help of my mother, who talked me through her experiences of hair styling using rollers in the 60s while we clipped the heated rollers into the hair. The ends of the rollers were cool to touch and even the velvety middles weren’t too hot to handle so it was an easy process and before long every hair was curled and clipped up. It was just a case of being patient and waiting for the rollers to cool down. I expect that the curls could probably be released sooner for a more relaxed wave but I wanted to try it out ‘properly’ during this first attempt so I waited until all the clips and rollers were totally cold. I’m guessing that this helped to set the curl so that it lasts longer because they looked very bouncy as they tumbled out of the rollers! Remington Professional Silk Rollers_-5

The hair actually looked more glossy than usual and you could really see all the highlights in each of the curls, which added to the Hollywood glamour effect. The rollers even added volume and I think it gave the effect of practically double the quantity of hair that went into the rollers in the first place! I didn’t use hair spray to set the curls but they still lasted a good amount of time – I really wanted to give the curls a good test it out so that I’d know whether they would last. Next time I use the rollers I will definitely use hairspray afterwards because I think this would help my hair style look great and last through even the bounciest of jive dances!

Let me know what you think about this hairstyle and I’d love to hear if you have any tips for making curls last longer. Also please share your ideas for different hairstyles using rollers because I’ll definitely be using these again and again to style my hair! Tweet me @Cassiefairy or leave me a comment below.

Halloween hairstyles

Halloween is my favourite time of year. I love getting dressed up, covering myself in fake blood and putting on those all-important cat ears which, if I’m honest, have seen a lot of wear over the years. However, not everyone is a fan of fancy dress and some people can feel a little bit embarrassed when walking down the street. Luckily for you, I’m here to help.

This time of year always brings back those styling tricks and tools that you had almost forgotten about. From serious backcombing to old school crimping, there are so many different types of hairstyles to choose from to help bring out your darker side. halloween hairstyles 1

To achieve extreme, hair-raising volume, all you need is some hairspray and a comb. Start to segment your hair and backcomb each section at the roots. Don’t be afraid to be as messy as you want. To get an even more terrifying look, why not backcomb the whole length of your hair, or add some hairspray into the roots to make your hair stand on end. This is an extravagant look and works perfectly for Halloween. You could also add in a few curls or create an oversized quiff or updo for your fright-night look.halloween hair

I’m sure many of you still have crimpers hidden away somewhere (I know I do), so delve into your drawers and give them a quick dust off. You never know, it may be the perfect hairstyle for your Halloween costume and you may even thank me for it!

Being artistic with your make-up is another way to get that unearthly yet chic style. Try framing your eyes with dark shades of brown, green or purple eye shadow, extending your eyeliner beyond your lid and shading in your eyebrows to deepen your ghoulish look. Ghost white complexions are almost a must on Halloween, so apply plenty of light powder or white face paint to create this effect and finish with nude/light pink lips.hairstyles for halloween

So, what do you think you will be dressing up as this Halloween? Have you thought about what you will do with your hair? Let me know in the comments below!

Pre-preparation to keep your hair looking great at Glastonbury

With Glastonbury starting this week and a plethora of music festivals taking place throughout the summer I thought it would be a good idea to write a blog post about how to pre-prepare your hair to keep it looking great during the festival season. Its one of the things that I dread about going to a festival: I know my hair is going to look terrible from the second day onwards. With the humidity, lack of washing facilities and inevitable rain showers, I end up looking like a dirty, fluffy poodle but this year will be different. I am taking time to plan my hair-care in advance so that I can survive the festivals and allow myself to be photographed after day one! So here’s what I’m suggesting:

  1. Get your hair in great condition before you go to Glastonbury. I know it seems obvious but a good foundation necessary in order to at least start the festival weekend with nice hair! So go for a trim, boost your colour and most importantly use a lovely rich hair mask such as Sexy Hair’s Deep Conditioning Masque which is infused with shea butter and olive oil. Make sure you leave it on your hair for the full 5 minutes in order to get as much moisture and healthy shine into your hair as possible which will give you an excellent base to work with.

  2. Choose a style and stick with it. If you’ve got straight hair, keep it straight and if you’re a curly girl, boost those curls because your hair will revert to it’s natural type after just one day of rain or tent humidity. So use a product to boost your hairs natural ability: such smoothing with straightening balm to reduce frizz before blow-drying straight or use Clynol Curl Bounce Fluid and dry with a diffuser to add definition to your curls. After the first day, all you should need to do with your hair is comb through with a spritz of leave-in detangler and if you’re a curly girl you can give your hair a scrunch with your hands to rejuvenate the curl.

  1. Hair can become lank after a couple of days so you might want to consider taking a dry shampoo with you and spray it in to boost volume and soak up any greasiness. Try a cheap online shop such as Click Fragrance to stock up on your Glastonbury haircare essentials and make sure you take some hair bands and grips with you to tie your hair up or plait your fringe to one side if you want to make your hair look neater after day two!

  2. If you find some nice clean facilities and want to wash your hair while you’re at the festival, make sure you take a great quality rich 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner such as Cheap Cowshed’s Lazy Cow haircare. Not only will it save you time in the dreaded communal showers but this product detangles tent-head hair whilst also giving your hair a burst of shine with vitamins C, E and organic argan to get it back to it’s pre-festival condition.

glastonbury fashion and hair ideas

Glamorous girls at Glastonbury 2013

If you follow these tips, your hair should stay in great condition and everyone will wonder how you managed to stay looking fabulous in a field full of mud! When you get home after the festival it’s important give your mud-splattered hair a good cleanse with some super-rich products such as Tigi’s Catwalk Sleep Mystique glossing shampoo and calming conditioner to get your hair back into its pre-Glaso condition and then you’ll be ready for the next festival of the summer..!
