Planning a holiday at Christmas? 4 ideas for your festive getaway

If you’re thinking of taking a break over the festive season, I’ve come up with some ideas for a Christmas getaway that you’ll never forget…

Other than a two-day break back in September, I haven’t had any time off this year. I mean, I don’t even remember the last time I had a whole weekend to myself! But that’s all about to change over Christmas. I think many people wait until the end of the year before taking a break and I’m certainly one of them. I don’t want to miss the excitement of the run-up to Christmas so I’ve planned to take some time off the week before, and won’t start working again until after the New Year. But what will I do with my time?

If you’re planning on taking a couple of weeks off over Christmas, there are so many things you can can do to enjoy a relaxing break – here are just a few ideas…

STAY AT HOME

I’ve written about the joy of a true ‘staycation’ on my blog before and it’s still one of my favourite things to do. I love being at home when everything is done, the house is clean and you can just enjoy it. And Christmas is the perfect time to enjoy a staycation. You can flick through festive magazines, watch retro Christmas films and you might actually get to read that Christmas novel (I can’t wait to dive into Heidi Swain’s Snowflakes and Cinnamon Swirls at The Winter Wonderland this year!). Staying at home takes away the stress of travelling during the holidays and give you plenty of free time to do all the things you mean to do at Christmas but never usually get round to.

TRAVEL ABROAD

If you’re planning to take time off Christmas, why not make it count by going on a winter sun holiday? Make everyone jealous by jetting off to a warm, sunny destination and spend your Christmas on a beach or cruising the Caribbean. It can sometimes be more hectic when you’re travelling during the festive holidays but, on the other hand, if you actually travel on Christmas day, there are probably going to be fewer passengers and queues to contend with! If bad weather strikes and you get ‘stuck’ abroad (there are worse problems to have!) make sure you’ve got travel insurance that offers a dedicated phone number to give travellers immediate assistance if needed.

HOLIDAY RENTAL

Sometimes, if you stay at home you just end up doing all the chores that you’d usually do and don’t really get to have the relaxing break you planned. It’s all too easy to open your laptop and check for emails and discover that you’ve ended up working for a couple of hours when you’re supposed to be on holiday. Booking a self-catering holiday home in the UK is the solution if you think you’ll be tempted to work when you’re supposed to be resting. Leave your tech at home and don’t even check if the cottage has wifi because you won’t be needing it! This way you have all the comforts of being in a home and can cook your usual Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, but you won’t be able to start a DIY project or sort out the loft. Let the relaxation commence!

SANTA’S GROTTO

Where’s the best place in the world at Christmas? Why, Santa’s grotto of course! So how about a holiday to Lapland? I’d LOVE to go on a Scandinavian holiday and experience a white Christmas. And to see reindeer, and visit Father Christmas. That’s definitely on the list for a future Christmas for me!
