If you’ve seen my other blog posts about my kitchen, you’ll know that I’m a bit of a fan of vintage crockery, cookware and style. I’ve given my kitchen a 1950s makeover to match the period of our home (more photos of the finished room to come in January!) and now I’m at the exciting stage of buying new-to-me retro pieces to fill my cupboards…
So, naturally, this month I decided to write about Pyrex for the Design Icon column in Reclaim magazine. It gave me a great excuse to research the company and find out more about this still-going-strong brand. I admit, I’ve got some modern Pyrex pieces in my kitchen cabinets (I mean, who doesn’t?) but it’s the vintage designs that really fascinate me.
I met a lovely lady Sally at a local makers market a couple of months ago and she’d just picked up some vintage Pyrex from the charity shop. While I was admiring the vibrant design, she told me all about her collection of original Pyrex and it sparked an idea for this month’s article in Issue 46 of Reclaim.
It was so interesting to find out about the different Pyrex logos and designs during my research. And when I saw the photos of her collection below, I was astounded – it was more like a Pyrex museum! With designs such as Briarwood, Tempo, Sunflower, Gooseberry, Harvest and Fiesta on her shelves, it’s an eclectic mix of Pyrex’s famous patterns and colours.
Considering that we’re so close to Christmas now, it’s no wonder that I’ve started coveting this crockery set with scandi-style snowflake pattern. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to serve a warm mince pie on one of those plates? I’m going to keep an eye out for a similar set throughout the year and hope to bag some snowy Pyrex of my own!
What Pyrex design do you like the best? I think my favourite has got to be the Briarwood pattern above because the orange tones coordinate with my turquoise-and-orange kitchen perfectly. Hi Alys! That’s wonderful and I’m glad to hear you’re still using your grandma’s collection 🙂 The set we photographed belongs to a friend so I’m going to keep an eye out for some snowflake pieces of my own this year!
Hi Cassie! I’m lucky enough to have grown up with Pyrex “snowflakes” and have my Grandma’s surviving items, along with quite a few extras now! My collection is in use now, in January, after the brights of Christmas! ❄️
