It’s less than a month until Mother’s Day in the UK, which is on Sunday 14th March. If you’re thinking of buying something unique or personalised from an independent maker, that gives you four weeks to choose a gift, request any custom details and gives the crafter time to handmake and deliver your lovely gift. So it’s the perfect time to start browsing Etsy’s Editors Picks for Mother’s Day to find a lovely gift.

Today I’m sharing my own experiences of shopping with eight fabulous Etsy shops so that you can get some ideas for buying your mum some handmade and unique Mother’s Day presents…

UNRULY PRINT

If you’re looking for a truly personalised original artwork for your mum, I bet it’ll cost less than you think at Etsy shop Unruly Print. This Suffolk-based artist hand-makes one-off lino prints in any colour, phrase or name you like for just £19 delivered. Each artwork is signed by the artist and beautifully wrapped in tissue paper and recyclable packaging, then it can be posted either directly to your mum, or to you so that you can give it to her yourself.

LYDIA MIRIAM DESIGNS

Last year, I ordered my mum’s gift from Lydia Miriam Jewellery – a beautiful tagua necklace in shades of blue and green. There are multiple different combinations of colours and numbers of beads so you’ll be sure to find a unique piece of jewellery that matches almost all of our mum’s outfits. The ethically sourced and sustainable tagua beads are surprisingly lightweight and buying a necklace from Lydia helps to support the artisans in Ecuador who hand-dye the beads.

MAPLE AROMATICS

I shopped with small-batch candle makers Maple Aromatics this time last year and the candle I ordered is still going strong! Their candles are hand poured with natural soy wax (so they’re vegan) and blended with therapeutic-grade essential oils – the bergamot one I have smells incredible. There’s nothing artificial in the candles, not even any colourings, which I find really reassuring, and I bet you’ll find your mum’s favourite scent in their Etsy shop. The added bonus is that the jar is recyclable when you’ve finished burning the candle.

LOVELY LYDIA

Having taken the hints I’d been dropping, my husband bought my birthday gift from Lovely Lydia’s Etsy shop. I have seen her designs at local markets in the past and each one is impeccably hand-made. Lydia hand-prints natural linen and cotton fabrics and turns them into purses, make-up pouches, wash bags, cushions and tea towels so you’ll definitely find something special for your mum in her Etsy shop.

HANNAH BERRIDGE

If you want to treat your mum to a personalised gift, you can ask local ceramic artist Hannah Berridge to hand-paint a bowl, plate, mug or hanging decoration for her. Each item is individually painted in one of her iconic designs, inspired by the Suffolk countryside, and you can add a name or message to the base or inner rim. I previously asked Hannah to recreate my cats in ceramic and I love how she captured their personalities! Best of all, the gift you choose can be delivered straight to your mum as Hannah will box it up beautifully, tie it up with coloured string and attach a gift tag with your own message on it.

ASPEN PRESS

I have previously stocked up on cards from Aspen Press at local markets and I’m glad that I did because I’ve been able to post these inspirational little notes to my mum during the multiple lockdowns we’ve had this past year. You’ll be sure to find an uplifting card for Mother’s Day and their packs of quotes with a little wooden stand makes a lovely gift. Each pack contains ten letterpress cards featuring words of wisdom on the topics of love, gardening, inspiration, friendship and more.

BLUEBELL LANE

If your mum loves silver jewellery, look no further than Suffolk-based maker Bluebell Lane. Ruth uses recycled sterling silver to hand-craft special pieces, from earrings and rings to necklaces and bangles. I’ve seen her creations at local markets and I’ve got my eye on a few items for myself! I think it’s so lovely to own a piece of jewellery that you can’t buy in the shops, and this makes your gift to your mother extra-special for Mother’s Day this year.

LILAC BLOSSOM

Have a look at the Lilac Blossom Shop on Etsy to find cute purses and bags, each handmade by the shop owner. You can request a specific initial, word or shape to personalise their coin purses, and you can even select what colours you would like your design to be – right down the the colour of the zip. I ordered a matching mum-and-daughter set of purses for my friend at Christmas, and I love how vibrant they are! Simply ping Lilac Blossom a message and work with this maker to create a unique accessory for your mum.

I hope that you find a lovely and unique handmade gift on Etsy for your mum on Mother’s Day and fingers-crossed that my experiences of shopping with these sellers has helped 🙂
