Six in the city: 6 cocktails every girl should know

Advertisement feature

Ask yourself the all-important question… what’s my favourite cocktail? Frivolous it may seem, but given that first impressions count and ‘what are you drinking?’ is often the first question a client/date/friend will judge you on – you’ll want to know your preferences. And, at the very least, know your daiquiris from your martinis! If it’s time to refresh your taste buds, here are six impressive cocktails that should be on everyone’s list…

Old Fashioned

Great for a ‘serious afternoon soiree’, this classic cocktail packs a heady punch. The ‘Old Fashioned’ is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance thanks to its starring role in ‘Mad Men’. It’s best served on ice cubes, using slowly diluted Bourbon (some use brandy) and is sweetened with sugar, bitters and a twist of orange rind.  Always impressive, it’s hard to not look cool with an ‘Old Fashioned’ in your hand.

2 Lava Lamp

Definitely one for Saturday nights out with the girls. This orange flavoured delight uses magic (otherwise known as gelatinous cocktail spheres), to create a gin based cocktail that smokes – yes smokes! Watch as bar spotters look on in envy, pointing to the bartender saying ‘I want that one’. According to Chief Mixologist Nitin at Aluna in Birmingham: “Lava Lamp and Pomegranate Cosmopolitans are extremely popular, especially at the weekend. They bring a sense of theatre and magic to an evening, and are firm favourites with those who appreciate cocktail couture.”

3 Pomegranate Cosmopolitan

Sure, we all know that a cosmopolitan is the ‘go to’ cocktail in times of doubt. But, show your cocktail prowess by upgrading to the ‘Pomegranate Cosmo’. Head to a top cocktail bar and impress friends with its bubbling twist.

4 Deadly Elixir

Want to shake things up? Then the ‘Deadly Elixir’ is a must – this will turn every head in the room… except the skull glass you’re holding! Served on fire, this flaming potent rum punch is best served on wild nights out!

5 Banoffeerama

Skip dessert and head straight to the delicious ‘Banoffeerama’ cocktail, the chic after-dinner tipple to impress clients. Banana liqueur meets dark chocolate with a sweetened addition of caramel dark rum. Irresistibly moreish, this signature cocktail is one to remember when ordered on behalf of others.

6 Kiwi Twister

Be prepared for the moment your work colleague demands ‘shots’, there’s always one! Avoid demonic potions that will leave you loose-tongued and bleary eyed, in favour of a refreshing alternative. Fusing kiwi with gin with an added twist of elderflower, the ‘Kiwi Twister’ is the ideal shot for work party get-togethers.

How to order like a pro

Top tips for essential bar talk:

  • Order your drink ‘on the rocks’ and it will come undiluted with ice cubes.
  • When ordering a drink ‘neat’ you’re just ordering the liquor by itself.
  • If you don’t have a preference over the brand of alcohol or mixer, ask for a ‘well drink’ and let your mixologist choose for you.
  • Want to look like a pro? Asking for your martini dry means that less vermouth is added, while ‘wet’ does the opposite. Don’t forget, martinis are made from gin or vodka – don’t forget to let your bartender know your preference.
