Autumn’s here and the new season fashion has hit the shops. If you’re bewildered by the selection, I hear you! I had a quick whizz around the stores and have concluded that A/W18 fashion can be grouped into a few textures/patterns that could’ve come straight out of your grandparents’ wardrobe, so here’s how to get the look for less this year…
GRANDMA’S TWEED
You only have to open a fashion magazine to see snaps of front row folk wearing tweed blazers. Tweed was spotted on the runway at Mac Jacobs, Miu Miu and Chanel (as always!) and it’s a really wearable texture for autumn. In fact, you probably already have some tweed in your wardrobe from last autumn, or the autumn before that. I know I already have a couple of tweed coats that have been with me for 4 years and counting. Have a rummage in your wardrobe and see what you can find. Or rummage in your fella’s, brother’s or dad’s wardrobe and go for the ‘boyfriend’ look with an oversized tweed jacket.
CHECKS
I think it’s the back-to-school feeling that gets everyone excited for checked patterns at this time of year. I often find myself reaching for that checked skirt whenever the weather’s cold enough for tights and boots. Versace and Michael Kors sent huge checks down the catwalk for A/W18 but there’s no need to spend that kind of money on your checked outfit. I bet you know a guy who has a checked shirt in their wardrobe, don’t you? Steal it, add a belt and suddenly you have a plaid mini dress. Add some ‘oh no’ proof boyshorts, thick tights, a clutch bag and heels and you’re ready for an autumnal night out.
GRANDAD JUMPER KNITS
This trend was all over the catwalk at the Erdem, Tory Burch and Preen A/W18 shows. You can basically wear ANY argyle pattern, cable knit or fair isle design and call it a grandad jumper. I turned a lot of my fair isle jumpers into festive cushions last Christmas so I think I’ll have to shop secondhand for some ‘new’ ones! Oversized shapes are good for this look and will keep you warm all winter long. Layer them over pretty floral dresses or metallic skirts to get that ready-for-a-festive-party look. It’s a more subtle way to get that Christmas jumper feeling without resorting to a flashing Rudolph’s nose stitched onto the front. Plus, you can find knitted jumpers in all the charity shops so it needn’t cost you a fortune to stay cosy this autumn.
