Low-cost & homemade Mother’s Day gifts you can post to your mum this year

As we can’t visit our mums on Mother’s Day this year, I’ve had a think about some alternative ways to celebrate on Sunday 14th March. I’ve come up with some lovely letterbox gifts so that your mum can still open her present on Mothering Sunday – simply give her a video call and you can still enjoy the moment together. Plus, I’ve shared a quick project to make a homemade gift that you can easily send in the post…

‘WHEN THIS IS OVER’ VOUCHER

I always think that experiences are so much better than things when it comes to gift-giving so I would recommend giving your mum a voucher that you can enjoy together ‘when this is over’. It’ll definitely fit through her letterbox and you can include it with her card, so it shouldn’t cost more than a first-class stamp to post it. You could promise something simple, like bringing a picnic to her garden when restrictions are lifted, or taking her to the seaside in the future. Or you could arrange for an experience voucher to arrive in the post. Things like pampering sessions, afternoon tea, meals out, theatre tickets would all be wonderful to look forward to in the future.

If you can’t decide on an activity right now, an experience gift box fits through a letterbox and gives your mum the option of choosing from hundreds of places to go and things to do. LETTERBOX ARTWORK

The great thing about buying artwork is that it’s often flat enough to fit through a letterbox – and that’s certainly the case with Etsy maker Unruly Print’s deliveries. You can get a hand-printed and signed lino print artwork delivered to your mum directly from the artist, who will even write a gift note and wrap the print for your mum. It arrives protected in a slim white cardboard box that will fit through most letterboxes. Any of the artist’s designs can be customised with a colour of your choice or personalised with a quote or name. JOURNALING SET

One thing that’s certainly slim enough to fit through a letterbox is a journal, so it might be a nice idea to treat your mum to a lovely notebook to write in. I’ve recently blogged about the mental health benefits of writing a journal so I think it’s also a very important gift to give this Mother’s Day, especially if your mum is struggling with being alone or has any worries. Writing about any concerns certainly helps those who journal to feel better. A jazzy rainbow pen like the one I previously got from Pen Heaven will also brighten her day. HAMPER FULL OF TREATS

Is there anything nicer than a box full of goodies arriving on your doorstep? A gift hamper is something that I’ve actually received myself this year – this chocolate hamper below to be precise – and I thoroughly enjoyed eating my way through the treats. In fact, I’ve still got a couple of items left in the hamper so it’s a gift that your mum could carry on enjoying for the days and weeks following Mother’s Day.

I’ve also previously DIY’d a customised hamper for Mother’s Day so you could always make one yourself. You can personalise just for your mum by filling it with her favourite items – gardening goodies or pampering treats, perhaps? Of course, arranging delivery of the homemade hamper will cost more in postage than something that fits through the letterbox, so you might want to factor in the cost of a courier collection if you’re making a hamper yourself. Or buy a ready-made hamper of gourmet treats online with delivery included and request for the parcel to be left in a safe place.

DIY PRINTED TOTE OR TEE

If you’ve got a few craft supplies in your home, you may already have everything you need to make a tote bag or t-shirt especially for your mum. You can personalise the design by choosing her favourite quote or photograph and then transferring the image onto the fabric. You can use iron-on transfer paper that can go through your printer, or you can print an image onto regular paper and use a Mod Podge transfer kit to get the image onto the fabric. For those of you with a cutting machine (or you can just use a craft knife or scissors) it’s easy to make your own slogan t-shirts using heat-transfer vinyl in a rainbow of colours. I make my own designs regularly and it’s a lovely gift that you can personalise for mum. You should be able to fold the t-shirt or tote into a small parcel that will fit through a letterbox and it should be lightweight enough to post at a low cost – just make sure you weigh it before buying postage online.
